I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how that felt knowing they were all gone.
But I agree,with any dog but ESPECIALLY a hunting breed, once they've had a taste of them there is no way to stop it. They just won't forget one day. It may be suppressed but could come up at any time when the dog is unattended and the chicken is flapping or running. I have a 7 year old beagle who is terrified of most animals but I would never trust her alone even though she has never given me a reason not to. You never know when they can snap.
