Had to bury my 19 chicks today.....

Im sorry.....I know how you feel I bought a RIR Chick a week ago and a couple days later my cat reach though the bars of the cage and killed it

Thanks again everyone. I'm just having a hard time getting over that my dog did it and that I was just playing with them minutes before and then it was all over. TSC is opening soon so I will be there in about an hour. I was thinking about waiting another day because a country market by my house gets their first batch of chicks tomorrow and I hear they have fancier breeds but me not being able to wait will be heading out this morning.

No way........a dog that kills cannot be trained Not to do it....I have a dog that will behave to some extendt when I am Right there, if I so much as turn my back he will grab them in a min. He has killed mine and I have had him trained and retrained and its hopeless, it's an individual thing, some dogs will kill and some wont, I have both................And I know how you feel, I am SO sorry for your loss, I cant imagine having them all taken away like that, Im glad you are getting more, and Im sure it wont happen again, but dont let anyone tell you the dog can be trained not to do it again, sorry to say.

MY lab is in the yard everyday with the chicken unnatended.. he does fine. He chases them every once in a while, but they just fly up to the fence post and watch him. He cant get them, there tooo fast.

I have a collie that could live in the coop with them and not hurt them....I was just saying Some dogs will kill and when they are that type of dog No training in the world can change it

sorry this happened. My beagle mix would never hurt the chicks but I have taught him " babies" since he was a puppy so everything is his baby and he protects them. On Thursday night my daughter let my son's husky out in the back yard we had the baby chicks growing out in the new coop we thought it was secure no she found a way in. I found the chicks Friday afternoon when I got back from out of town she had killed all 5 of my 4 week old chicks. I will get some new ones on Wed. I have fixed the coop but it is sad that one of our own dogs killed my chicks. I will never trust her with the chickens but I am still training and working with her. Good luck. The only good thing is I now know where the weak spots on my new coop our and they have been fixed.

Well I got my new babies. TSC didnt have much to choose from but I got 24. 12 Bantams and 12 yellow ones...they dont know what they are. If they are like my other yellow ones they will be beautiful. The ones I lost were turning white and black and some where black and speckled so I guess we're going to be suprised. TSC remembered me and felt bad so they gave them to me for $1.00 and $1.50. Not too bad because there was not special this week and they wanted $2.49. I'm still going to hit that country store tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to get some silkies and I'm told they have fancier breeds than tsc. Since they will be a day apart placing them I think I'm good mixing.

I am so sorry for your loss

I would KILL my dog if he so much as looked at my chicks cross-eyed. I understand it's the instinct, but man...I have very little tolerance
