Last week my cat got into the brooder and killed 2 of my 13 chicks, so I know how you feel. I was and still am very upset over it.

....We cant blame the dog because it's her breed that is what she is suppose to do is hunt.

I'm glad you feel that way about your beagle. Too many would lable her a "bad dog" for doing what beagles were designed (by us humans) to do. My chickens are my pets, but my beagles are my children! (And in my book, a breed above all other dogs.)
A big hug to you, and a healthy new flock... And a belly rub for your beagle.

Our kids wanted to say bad dog...they are young so they dont understand but we explained to them this is what beagles do. They want rabbits....that wont happen! She knows she's done wrong you can tell by the way she sulks when she walks by us. All we have to say to her ever is "What did you do" and she know's she's in trouble. I got 24 new ones today and she is pacing by the door. I'm afraid now that her instincts kicked in we're in for trouble. We never use her for hunting and she's been on the electric fence sine about 9 months old, she's almost 3. Everyone told us you cant keep a beagle on an electric fence but we proved them wrong. I just hope once the chicks are moved she does not break thru the fence.

I hope I didn’t come across as calloused about your loss. I just have a serious soft spot for beagles. I’m about ready to head for bed. I hope my wife and two beagle girls left me a little room on the queen-size... There's nothing more soothing than sharing your pillow with a snoring beagle.

I am so sorry for your losses! It's bad enough to lose chickens to predators, it's even worse when your own pet IS the predator. I hope everything works out for you
