Had to make a bigger brooder! pics

They were not happy in the rubbermaid tub any longer, so we built a 42x24 brooder with room to flap wings, and they are actually PLAYING and running around! I used door screening because I didn't want to deal with the hardware cloth, and they are inside the house so I figured it'd be ok for a brooder. if it gets too beat up, I will just take the legs off and add something more substantial.

And aren't they funny... the way they sleep? They are hilarious!

And my oldest daughter gave them a couple stickers for decor... I thought it was funny.

Love it! A question....how is your heat lamp situated? Looks like its just sitting there I'm assuming on top of hardware cloth or the mesh?

The light is just sitting on the metal screen lid. I'm not too worried about it, we're down to a 100 watt bulb and it *just* warms the metal, it doesn't get too hot. And the chicks don't even usually sleep right under it.

what an awesome looking brooder! i would have hubby build us one like yours (cuz i really like yours!!)....but we're only gonna do chicks probably just this once.....at least not for a long time. if i lived in the country, that would be a different story! i would have to have MANY chickens!! as for now...i have a large cardboard box that i'm sure won't last too long....so i feel like my spare room will be their brooder!

i'm laughing, but i'm also serious!

Thanks!! It was so easy. We actually bought the scrap wood at home depot (the cheapest stuff, leftover from others cuts or not perfect etc.) and they home depot guy cut all of it for me. So all we had to do at home is screw it all together! It probably cost $60? My kids poked a hole in the screen already, so I guess that wasn't the best plan.... but it just seemed SO much easier than the hardware cloth!! And it was. But it's not very hardy. I think I will have to take it apart and use the hardware cloth. Oh, well. You live and learn.
