I just applied for 2 student credit cards that are made to help college students build their credit and I got denied for not having credit...

That is actually unsual. College students are normally extended credit of $500. The credit card companies know the students will max out their cards amd Mom and Dad will pony up the cash. Or the student maxes the card and can't pay, then has bad credit for years. Credit trap any way you look at it.
