I feel like I've been stalking the archives at BYC forever, so it was about time I created an account and left lurkland.

I live in a graduate student housing co-operative. Last fall, a group of us formed a "chicken faction" to research what a small backyard flock would entail, if our city allowed it, and how 16 students could care for a few birds without killing them. Thanks largely to BYC, we were able to put together the most comprehensive proposal our house has seen yet. We've found a local co-operative hatchery to get heritage birds from, we've designed a coop that gives the birds the golden ratio (1 bird : 4 square feet coop : 10 square feet run) while maximizing our construction dollar, we've found scads of local chicken resources and support, and we know what health problems to look for and how to treat them.

BYC, you've given a bunch of grad students at Ph.D. in poultry. We were even able to win over the vegans. Thanks to you, we'll be getting our birds just as soon as our coop is built! (We're scheduled to begin construction after spring finals week.) Thank you!

What a great project for students! It sounds like you did your research and it will certainly pay off. Glad you figured in the space that is needed. It will be interesting to see the construction of your new coop. A lot of the problems with hens is overcrowding. Keep us posted on your progress and best of luck!

Welcome from a fellow Oregon grad student at OSU. Don't worry, I'm not a beaver or ducks fan, I'm a dawg. :p

Glad you are able to have chickens! Mine are all 300 miles away.
