I have eggs laying chickens and had meat chickens. The meat chickens had to go, they were in pain, there where 4 in all, one rooster. The other two were rooster, they were not meat chickens and where really important to the pecking order. They were taken out because of my parents got bored of them, trust me, I know my parents, I am not a moody teen that wants to kick my parents because of not having me a phone. The chickens are more of pets than egg laying providers, I feed my chicken 90% of their eggs back to them and my neighbors are fine with the crowing. I have some animals like a pets - one nice goose, some funny goats, ducks, and chikens too. But another animals i use for a meat. I do everything by muself because this is more comfortable - i always know who can be killed, and who NOT. My parents never enter to this "business", but sometimes i really need to be a butcher. But i don`t kill my pets.
Well, as a pet i have near of 30 ducks, but after the summer i have near of 100 or more ducks, and escess ducks - yes, i eat them...
My "pets" are mine, nobody touch it (for eat), and, for example, i have some very old ducks, they don`t lay eggs yet or lay only sometimes, but i will not kill them, they are my pets.

The solution to this issue will probably deal with all of this by itself, without involving anyone, including slaughter. Then you can decide for yourself which bird will be eaten and which remains forever. Well, for this matter, I personally just breed a lot of birds - I have relatively many geese, ducks, chickens and turkeys.
