Halloween Candy Recall

Quote:
I didn't follow the story too close - but yes in the milk case and the pet food - someone/s were ADDING it to try fool the tests on the products - I think it makes the product test HIGHER for Protien.

In the pet food case, I do remember hearing someone was charged and they ended up killing themself. (heck someone must know more) They have arrested those involved with the milk scandal.

WHY ADD MELAMINE TO MILK POWDER?

-- Melamine is rich in nitrogen, and relatively cheap. Adding it to sub-standard or watered-down milk makes the milk's protein level appear higher. Standard quality tests estimate protein levels by measuring nitrogen content.

IS THIS WHY IT WAS ADDED TO PET FOOD?

-- Yes. Melamine was linked to the deaths of cats and dogs in the United States last year after it was added to wheat gluten and other pet food ingredients exported from China, in another attempt to boost the products' apparent protein content

this may be kinda off topic and i am sorry...but...
how is the melmine getting into the food?...

You're very much right ON topic there!

After reading that article I don't trust ANY candy made with milk.

I won't be eating or sharing candy made in China, the U.S., or Canada.

Now I'm wondering about European chocolates....
