HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

What a busy day on this thread!

Okay, so sometimes I can get the quotes to work, and sometimes it just turns out to be a big confusing mess. The joys of technology. So, sorry about that!

Congratulations everyone on the new babies! Still loving the pictures and all the conversations.

My heart goes out to everyone dealing with issues and losses. And the broken shipped eggs even brought tears to my eyes. I am so sorry for you all.

Here's an update on us. As of last time I checked, there were still only 5 chicks. 2 are not really doing great. I still have a lot of hope though. However, hope takes a hit every time this silly Australorp poops in her nest. Yep, she did it AGAIN! Last time I went back out, I was going to prepare for bloody arms and clean out the nest box, but while I was gone she cleaned it out herself. I didn't know chickens did that!? I was sure surprised! No more checking in tonight.

Here is a picture of the freezing chick I warmed in my hand. So tiny!

Our other broody momma (Buff Orpington) is doing well. Today, I am going to have Duke (my hubby) put his gloves on and move her so I can get a look at her eggs and just make sure she is not fouling up her nest. I am pretty sure she isn't. She gets up and moves around every 2 days. Day 21 for her is next Saturday.

AND... collecting eggs tonight, we now have 3 Buff Brahmas in the "Broody Hens Club"!! What in the world?! LOL! Duke said we are not giving her any eggs because it is too late in the year. I went right inside and started getting her eggs ready. He did not object (as I said, he loves the new chicks too!). I have the eggs ready for all three hens, but am giving them time to show me how serious they are.

I wonder if any more will join the club tomorrow...

I am sorry about your eggs. I have never ordered eggs through the mail. However, I have never received a priority box that was so beat up. I think unmarked might be better, it looks like someone did that on purpose.
my goose egg box came like that. It was also scrunched and beat up.

I got 6 eggs out of the 7 though, 1 broken. dunno if any will develop or make it to lock down, or even out of the shell.... :(

Mine was written on there, to be careful with the box.

I've had other eggs ordered online and never received a box quite so broken.

Quote: awwwwww I sure hope she keeps it up so cute. I think that antibiotic is good for her. I would not know anything else to do. There is no specific treatment; antibiotic use is based on the prevalent bacterial type involved. Even then, treatment may not result in satisfactory outcomes, because severely affected chicks and poults often die, and unaffected birds are unlikely to be aided by antibiotic treatment. The disease is prevented by careful control of temperature, humidity, and sanitation in the incubator.

This is the kind of luck I'm having with eggs...

That's a box inside a box btw...

Oh no! So sorry! I'm glad they're sensing replacements though.

5 blood rings. 2 with visibly cracked shells. The kids deny even looking at the incubator. I'm not buying it.

I'm sorry :( kids get so excited over this stuff and want to see. Thankfully, my kids haven't done it yet (or haven't gotten caught yet) but then, I hatch so often anymore that I don't think they care anymore. My daughter likes to look when I candle though. Do you still have many others that are still good in there? Can you maybe move the incubator somewhere that won't be tempting, like a bedroom?

WOW! Power was just out here for about half an hour! The Incubator was out and went down to 80, but was not that low for more than 5 minutes. I RAN to the incubator, and wrapped it with towels before I started looking for heating elements, But before I could find some the power was back on!

Glad the power came back on quickly for you! It shouldn't make that much of a difference. Even if the bator dropped to 80, I'm sure the eggs didn't drop more than a degree or two on the inside. They're like little heat sinks on their own :) I swear, a full cabinet bator of eggs saved themselves last year when my incubator malfunctioned and had no heat to it all night!

The first batch of eggs into the incubator, my two boys went into my bathroom and smashed all my eggs the day i put them in. Then, my 12 year old let his 2 year old brother finger paint with the broken eggs all over the floor.

He brought him outside and pretended like he didn't know what happened.

Except his 2 year old brother totally tattled on him. LOL

Love it but that is also so gross!! Lol

Before I forget I wanted to ask about your response to my last Miracle message was that a good "Dang girl!" Or a bad one?

Sorry I know I over think things. It's the wine talking lol.

Big storm here tonight praying for rain but no power loss. Seems okay so far!

Praying for rain BC if we get rain DH2B gets the day off tomorrow and he so needs it. Plus I miss him! Farmers give up so much in the spring and fall.
LOL nothing ever bad for you love!! I so hope you enjoy the day!!! sounds fun!!! hugs sweetie!! your a great chicken momma!

So sorry the little backwards chick didn't make it.

Well sorry this is so late just got home from a wedding. Been a busy day.

Miracle was doing poorly this morning. She couldn't stay balanced and would barely take any water. This afternoon I got a bit more in her. Fully supporting her while she drank I repeatedly offered her water knowing that every bit I get in her carries with it much needed electrolytes and antibiotics. I'm not gunna lie I completely thought she would be gone when we got home. We didn't intend to stay so late but seeing family you don't get to see very often well I'm sure most if you know.

I prepared myself when I looked into the incubator and there ...

Running around her strawberry box cheeping excitedly was my little Miracle. Oh gosh how can I hope? The ups and downs are just about killing me. Still I fight. This afternoon I was questioning if she was suffering. Tonight I feel a little hopeful again. I hope this chick never ceases to amaze me.

She drank much more willing and downright excitedly tonight so much so that she kept attacking the measuring spoon and forgetting where the water was. She still is not eating to our knowledge but she is starting to show a little interest in food. Tomorrow we will try some baby food possibly. Along with the chick crumbles. Anything to get nourishment in her.

She seems in good spirits and as she ran here and there and everywhere tonight when I too her out I couldn't help but smile! She's a silly little thing as she cheeps and bounds here and there. Finally as she cheeped and cheeped she ran over to my hand clambered into it as I held it up slightly cupped to block her from careening towards the kitcen floor. She literally pushed into it pushing the cup sideways where she clambered into it snuggled up and promptly made super happy chick noises and fell asleep.

Mike who was watching looked at me smiled and said she's definitely imprinted on you. I'm Mommy! Isn't that the greatest thing! She's such a sweet little chick! She's just gotta make it! After a cuddle and some more water, an attempt at feed and her nightly iodine wash of her belly(and a warm washing of a mildly pasty bottom) I put my wiggly little Miracle to bed well see what tomorrow brings. If she looks as good as she did tonight her and brother will be moved out to our porch brooder where I can check them many times a day and keep a close eye on her. I believe we are getting to the point where both her and brother need to get out if not for her illness and not wanting him to be alone they would have already been moved. I also believe she will benefit from having a big brother to help encourage her to eat and drink.

Also I wanted to make a note. Her hobble is already off after this morning I believed it may improve her ability to stand she will be watched closely for signs she needs it back in but so far so good. She also did not end up needing boots as her feet straightened on their own. I'm so proud of her.
I know we're by no means out of the woods. I believe I'm catching some mild smell if infection from her but that could also be leftover from her fluff. Although she is nearly all fluffed up this evening. I am treating her with oxytetracycline hci this is the only water soluble antibiotics we had on hand. If anyone else has any further suggestions or knowledge for yolk sac infection treatment please let me know so that we can adjust accordingly. I want to give Miracle the best chance possible.

Much love everyone goodnight all I look forward to hearing from you all!

To get some nourishment in her, scramble up an egg and if you have a good blender, like a nutibullet, or ninja with single serve cups, throw the egg in there with some of her vitamin water. Use either an eye dropper or, if she willing to eat it off the spoon, then do it that way. I've had so much luck using this trick. Not long ago, I had a seriously injured young pullet. She got trapped in the turkey pen and wedged behind a tree with her head sticking through the chicken wire. While the turkeys couldn't get to her, the rest of the chicken flock could. They tore the feathers from her head and skin from the top of her head, all the way down her neck. They had even pulled the skin on the one side back, exposing her ear and the back side of her eye. I thought she was dead when I found her. I ended up stitching her up, 6 stitches down her head/neck. She was so weak for days and couldn't eat or drink. I used the egg/vitamin water trick and after a couple weeks, she's now back outside with the flock, a fiesty little thing. Her growth was stunted and she MUCH smaller than her sister but she's happy and healthy. I named her Mira, short for Miracle ;) I hope your little Miracle gets stronger every day!

Mira, as soon as she was stitched up

You saved her life. I had a goat that did the same thing once I saved her from a cat when she was a baby.
