HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Our serama hen is sitting on 5 eggs due 10/2
Wonderful, good luck!

Thanks everyone! Well, let me think about that, there are two Ameraucana eggs, two that I think are from my silkie, two unknown, a few RIR...........and I think that's about it

Great, look forward to seeing your entry!

Yesterday I set 15 Bresse eggs. We drove 95 miles to Jackson to get them. I'm hoping this is the beginning of a successful line of meat birds for us.

Good luck!

I will be setting some eggs for a customer in about 2 weeks. I don't believe that I have participated in a hatchalong since last Halloween. It has been a busy year.
Glad you have time to join

They are so pretty :love
I've never had seramas.  They lay white eggs?
Are they good broody mamas?

They lay a tiny cream colored egg. I'm new to this breed, but seems like all of my girls want to sit on everything! Very dedicated also.

So cute! But the one on the left looks like a roo with the big comb and wattles lol, when put next to that other one with such a dainty comb and no wattles

Yeah I noticed that lol caramel was a late bloomer. They all hatched at the same time.

It's day 14 for one of my broody hens. She was sitting on a dozen pullet eggs. After candling, she's down to 5. 5 were clear/infertile. 1 was a very early quitter, and 1 was a day 10-12 quitter.

I am in trouble. I just impulse bought 25 chicks at Meyer. They had free shipping

but now I have to tell my husband when he gets home and we agreed that it was getting too late in the year for new chicks.

But my son said it was a good idea to get more hens so we can hatch more eggs in the spring. So I can blame him, right?
Blame your son

Well, I lost another silkie egg to a blood ring. 2 are completely infertile, and a third may have a blood ring, but I can't quite tell if it's a blood ring, or the veins, so i'm going to give it another day or two, just to make sure I don't throw away a viable egg.

Out of 8, we are down 4, maybe 5. I'm kinda bummed.
Sorry about lost egg, good luck with the rest.

Walked outside just now to the coop and back and on the way back found one of our slw cockerals dead in the yard with no apparent cause. He was not stiff and had no injuries that I could see, other than being a little thin. Of course it had to be probably the nicest one of the four we are growing out. Ugh. Darn.

Came out carrying an egg from our legbar and saw that, boy did it rain on my parade.

Only two things I can think are I had just thrown them a bunch of large tomatoes did he choke on a bite, possibly get in a scuffle over one that I didn't see or hear and have his neck broken??? I'm thinking maybe he choked because he was happily eating with the rest of the flock when I walked away to go into the cooler coop.

Is this possible? What's the likelihood that he would just drop dead of no reason?
Sorry you lost your roster.

Well, I have some bad news... My little Singleton silkie/cemani mix chick was found dead in the brooder. It was drinking and eating, also getting tons of gentle attention so it wouldn't be lonely. So, I have no idea what caused its death.

On another less depressing note there are 7 Salmon Faverolle and 2 Millie Fleur d'Uccle eggs in the incubator. It is too early to get a definite fertile or not candling. Maybe in a day or two, but probably won't candle until closer to the weekend.
I'm so sorry.
Good luck with your hatch.

Here are my serama broody hens. Sapphire and caramel.

Cute!

Got 12 call duck eggs from @RavynFallen yesterday. Gonna put them in the bator tonight.
Awesome, good luck!

Most of the serama eggs I've seen have been cream to light brown. Back in the 00's I had a flock of serama for about two years, but none of my birds ever went broody. I love the breed though. My birds have all been super sweet.

Right now I have 2 serama x Bantam EE chicks I hatched from TJChickens. I'm hoping to get green eggs in the spring, but it's looking like I have 1 for sure roo.

I can't wait till my new eggs get here!!!

My quail eggs were set on Monday so will hatch long before Halloween. The bator is filled with a combination of eggs from a failure "jumbo breeder" of pharaohs, my own Mix of pharaoh/a&m mutts, and a breeders eggs who is going out of business including 30 random golden, silver, cinnamon and tibetan eggs. SPOOKY hatch coming up.

So my duck eggs are in lock down today from my home flock... Had 1 internal pip already!! Woo! I candled this morning before I left for work when I put them in lock down and upped their humidity.

On a side note, I found my runted/stunted hen in the coop the other day hiding behind the nest boxes from all the other chickens... Super skinny and pale wattles/combs, and weak. Put her in the brooder with some vitamin water, and her own food. Took her 2 days to have a normal poop. She has always been weaker, but never really picked on. She hates being mounted by the roosters though... I think I'm going to have her raise the ducklings, she's always been a good momma to the chicks. She pretty much raised my Barnevelders after their hatch, and of course when the barnies went outside so did she until 3 days ago :(
