HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

I MIGHT be in... Depends on eggs, I just got a styro bator, not 100% sure it will work for me, I need to give it a bleach bath, The person I got it from has used it and got chicks to hatch. so we will see!

A couple tips on hatching bresse  I wish I had been given before I tried to incubate them.

1) The eggs of pure or nearly pure birds don't have a protective bloom so be super careful with handling / candling, and perhaps look into one of the disinfectant egg sprays. (I will if I ever hatch bresse from my birds)
2) They do better with a lower initial humidity around 40-50% then up it to normal lock down levels after draw down. Evidently the eggs don't loose moisture the same way other chicken eggs do and its easy to drown them. ( I had other eggs that had been shipped in the incubator, so by pure luck  I was doing a dry hatch. I marked all the air cells to track moisture loss and the bresse air cells didn't change at all until the last  3 days)

In my research I also heard that bresse are prone to egg shell quality problems and need higher levels of calcium and protein than other meat birds. I brought that up with the fellow I bought my eggs from and he told me otherwise, but all of my eggs were porous and/ or seemed VERY thin.

:jumpy        I hope your hatch goes well       :jumpy

This is such valuable info! I've had best luck with dry hatching until lockdown, so hopefully it helps for these too.
I will be sure to handle the eggs with clean hands and great caution.
I sure appreciate your help!
Thanks! PJ

there's some show quality silkies on ebay. I think I may msg one and see if I can get 2 dozen shipped, for the bigger incubator to see if I can get a few to survive to hatch day. Now that we'll have our coops setup and the runs, and figuring out where we want to build a 3rd coop area, I'm excited. I want to get silkies setup for brooding next spring, because then I don't have to deal with the incubator.

Mind if I ask what the seller's ebay name is? I got some silkie hatching eggs this spring from eBay and the splash silkie that I got out of that hatch is absolutely stunning (in my eyes anyway).

I don't know. There's a lot of silkie eggs on there right now. I was looking at a couple seller's who were trying to sell 18+ eggs a batch.

I have a full 41 in the 'bator 5 days I'm so far! Power went out the other day and looking like a few blood rings, but a bunch of weird crosses and I'm hoping 3 khaki Campbells should make it!

Sometimes I think I see a blood ring, but it turns out to be nothing a few days later. Give it two or three days, and see if you still see a blood ring.

I'm in!

On 9/3 I set 24 Welsh Harlequin eggs, as of last night I have 17 that look good. I'm looking forward to the pitter patter of little duck feet!

Well, today has just been a rock bottom kinda day. First my Singleton chick dies, then the kids find my normally feisty Cayuga drake practically lifeless and barely breathing.

I don't know if he is going to make it through the night. He is taking very shallow breaths, but otherwise not moving a muscle; not even holding up his own head. He was fine less than a half hour earlier when I was outside taking pictures of the flock. He was walking around grazing and bug hunting with his girls. We have had zero predator activity all summer. No hawks, owls, coyotes, or snakes. Not even the presence of vultures anywhere near our little farm since our neighbor stopped raising chickens last year. So, I don't know what could have caused this.

I'm still here, too! I will try to do a candling on my eggs in the incubator on Thursday night. That will make my 3rd day, and maybe I will be able to tell a little bit on if I have some Blue Australorp chicks to look forward to soon. These eggs are all from my own flock. My Splash male looks like he has started doing his job with my blacks, but I'm trying see if he has been trying to bluff me or not!
