HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

I was hoping I would have a broody by the end of the month to hatch the SPR eggs I hope to have by then. I just won some eggs, so...

I will be firing up the incubator. Unless the girl that was teasing me last week finally decides she wants to sit.

Hope she goes broody for you. I had one go just in time for this last hatch. Have a few in the house too....Anyway, won't have one for this one though. So, I get to be mom. And, to find a place for them once they are ready to be outside. I hope I get a half way decent hatch though after seeing that box like that! :/

Where'd you get the SPR eggs? Are they heritage stock do you know? I have a breeder friend and myself that would both be interested in a few next spring. She's looking for some new blood and I think they're stunning. I'd love to hear in a PM if you don't mind so we don't clog up the thread. Thanks!

Ok... I have an interesting situation with my duck eggs. The ducklings are due to hatch in about a week. Well, I noticed one of the eggs wasn't forming an aircell. I thought maybe I was just missing the location of the aircell so, I didn't worry too much about it. Well, when I checked on the eggs this afternoon I decided to actually locate the aircell on this one egg. Turns out the aircell formed at the narrow end of the egg!

Question: Has this ever happened to anyone else? What did you do? And, does this duckling even stand a chance of hatching?

Wow, I miss a few days and lose like 15 pages!
@kajira I recently had a singleton hatch, and I used a real feather duster dangled from the lid of his brooder box. Worked like a charm!
@Sally Sunshine Sorry for the delayed reply! I am using two Brinsea's, an Octagon 20 and Octagon 40, both with humidity pumps. I mostly have CCL's and BCM's, but am currently waiting for 2 Silkie eggs to hatch in the 20. I have kept the temp in both at 100.5, and humidity at 40%, which goes up to 65 at lockdown. I've been incubating in the 40 and lockdown in the 20. I'm getting what I think is more than normal loss of life both during incubation AND lockdown. I've used two different hygrometers and taken the average results to determine the approximate percentage of humidity in both bators. I have no idea how to calibrate a hygrometer, or where I would get one. I've toyed with the idea of trying to surround, but not cover, the bators with styrofoam. Do you think that would help if the temp really is dropping at night?
Thank you so much for all your help!

Most the time the chick/duckling needs help hatching and pips in the narrow end of the egg. This has happened to me before- I had a Cream Legbar cockerel pip at the narrow end, but managed to hatch by its self. I would keep an eye on it.

Yes, they are. Still working on coloring. But, I have not seen brown on the boys, and two (out of six pullets) had a spot the last hatch. It's up to you if you are interested.

Oh, yes! Even a malpo has a chance, but with the aircell there, it should be fine. Do keep an eye on it. When you are done, or now, start a thread for others who have it happen.
