I guess I'll start here and jump to the November thread when it gets here. Shipped eggs just arrived today and I've got them resting. I'm nervous because in the quick candling while unwrapping them I couldn't see clearly defined air pockets in any of them. I'm hoping that it's a combination of untrained eye and trying to make out what's going on behind a tan/brown shell rather than bad eggs. Cross your fingers for me, guys. This is my first attempt and I'd hate for it to fail before I've even started.

ok... I honestly can't remember if I posted here about this, but something has been going on with either my incubator or my hatching abilities. my eggs are getting to lockdown, most of the time internally piping, and then dieing. I emailed Brinsea about it, as I heard from many people who have used their customer service, and loved it. I am very happy with them so far! they reply about as fast as they can, I emailed last night and then remembered that they where probably closed at 6 CA time... I got an email back by 9:30 am today. The person who emailed me back asked me a bunch of questions on what happened, and is hopefully coming up with ideas! Its just very frustrating this is happening. after we figure out what is going on, we will be hatching some cheap local eggs, to see if what we may have fixed works before I try again with something expensive.

Thank you! At the moment, I have 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Americaunas, 1 English Orp, an Olive Egger, a bantam Barred Rock, 2 bantam Old English Creles and a Muscovy duck who waddles around pestering everyone. And hopefully soon, I will have 6 new Ayam Cemanis chicks!

Incubation Troubleshooting

Eggs pipped, but chicks dead in shell.
Probable CauseSuggested Corrective Measure
Low average humidity in incubator; too low to too high in humidity at transfer time in hatcher.

Maintain proper humidity throughout incubation and hatching cycle.

Temperature too low or too high (more probably too high) in hatcher.

Check accuracy of hatcher thermometer. Operate at proper temperature.

Lack of ventilation in hatcher

Do not recirculate foul air. Supply 100 percent fresh, tempered air.

Chilled eggs

Maintain the proper temperature throughout incubation and hatching cycle.

Infected embryos - either by infection from dams, or especially by external microbial contamination through shell.

Gather eggs quickly, cool properly, and hold under proper conditions.

I said I wasn't going to hatch anymore after this last batch, but now I think I may try to get a few lavender sillkie eggs, specifically to hatch since all my lavender eggs died.
