Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

I've been gone all day. When I left 3 pips. Now 6. 1 just hatched and now I have another pip. It is calling out to the others, they are starting to pop like popcorn.

How do you figure out the hatche rate? Is it the total you started with?

For instance:

16 arrived unbroken/cracked
-2 Adam that Adam broke
-4 that were clear and never developed
-1 that quit around day 5-7

Which left me with 9 to go into the hatcher. 7 have hatched so far, 1 more pipped and last one is rolling a bit.

So how do you figure the percentage? Is it the number you start with? Minus the clears? (I hate to say unfertile, because they could have been and were just scrambled by the PO.) Or is it the number you send to the hatcher?

If they just hatched, they don't have much need for it yet. Just keep showing them once in a while, by dipping their beaks or poking it with your finger, and they will learn when they need it. You could also try putting some of their feed on top of the water, but I wouldn't worry too much till they are at least 24 hours old, maybe longer. I have only had to show mine once or twice, and I don't even show them all. The others will learn by watching. They will all start pecking at it, if they see one doing it.

The way I figure it for me is by the ones that had any development, whether they quit or not. Like if I set 18 eggs (like my first hatch) and took out 5 on day 7, that would leave me with 13. One of those had a blood ring, so it would be counted as being 'good'. So that was a total of 14 that had been developing. Out of that 14, 12 hatched, so that gives me a 86% for that hatch. That's the way I do it.
Some people count every egg that went into the bator, but there is always some reason why there is no development. I would surely not count ones that arrived broken, they never made it in the bator. Or the ones that the baby broke, because you don't know if they would have developed at all anyway.
I would definitely use my method for shipped eggs. If they didn't develop, either the P.O. scrambled them, or they weren't fertilized. But that's just me.

EDIT: I don't count the ones that candle clear, but I do all the rest.

Okay, this little bugger that hatched first is rolling all of the other eggs around where I can't see if they are pipped or not. She then looks up at me like "are you my mother". So cute. It has coaxed several others to pip.

Woohoo! I had 2 pips when I came home from work at 2pm.
1 hatched at 6ish. Waiting on the others to get a move on now.

Congrats everyone!
The waiting is the hardest part.

Hey ya'll!!
Congrats to all the new mommies!!!

I still am at 8 chicks. I have 5 eggs with nothing. I'm going to candle a little later to see if I can see anything.

The two babies that I had to help out of the shell are still doing okay. Everyone is in the brooder now, and they seem to be getting a little stronger. I'll post pics in a bit...
