Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

I had the babies outside with Momma yesterday and they were scratching and peeping and trying to fly. They are just so durn cute!!!

My other chickens were put away. Momma got into a brawl with my GSL yesterday. The babies were still in the dog crate (I opened the top so that Momma get get in and out at her discretion. Once while out, these two tore each other up. Glad the babies were not under her feet.

I took video of the babies taking a dirt bath with their Mommy tooo. It was so sweet!

My new baby has no eyes!!! I need to cull it, so it doesn't have to starve to death, but I don't know if I can!

I'm so sorry Shelley.

I think someone on the board here has a chicken they have successfully raised that has no eyes. Maybe try posting in the emergency forum to get some more advice?

Oh Shelley, I am so sorry! I don't know if I could do that either. Poor thing! Was this an incubator egg? or with mama?

This was a with mama egg, and it took 24 days to hatch. I just checked it, and it does have eyes, but one won't open and the other won't close. It's like the eyelids aren't formed right. But it can't see either way.

Out of 15 total eggs there are 2 live chicks. I don't know if there is something wrong with the hen or what! This is the same bird that has really weird air cells in her eggs?

Seems like I read some where on BYC that someone had a blind chick & another chick in the bunch helped that baby out. I think you should post something about your blind chick & see what help you can find.

Me....I am always one that has to help the underdog...I take a lot of flack from it but OH WELL! If the chick seems healthy otherwise, then I think it should have a chance some how. Just my opinion.

Right now it is still inside in a box with the other chick that hatched a few days before. I think the older one is kinda helping it out. The blind one is about 3 days old now, and doesn't seem to be getting any worse. It was sleeping a lot yesterday, but it was walking around pretty good today. It might be ok. I just love to know what my dad will say when I tell him they are staying inside!! The blind one is not going to be able to go out with the other chicks, and can't be alone, so these two are gonna be lifetime buddies, if it makes it.

The little blind chick is still hanging in there! I don't have the heart to cull it, but I have no idea what I'm gonna do if it survives to adulthood!! It's brooder buddy keeps busting out (twice in two days I have thought there was a mouse running right to me!!), and I think I am gonna have to take it away. I should have some more hatching in a week or so, so the blind one should get some new company! As long as I can keep the other one in the stinkin' box till the new ones hatch!! It is bad enough to step in chicken poo when you go outside, it is another thing to step in it in your hallway!!
