I'm WAAAAAAY too old to trick or treat but that doesn't stop me from LOVING Halloween! I love to dress up for the kids and pass out tons of candy! I'll dress up in whatever I have around. I love to make my own costumes and have often made them for DH and the kids. One year DH and I went as Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.
Another year I went as a broken doll. Curled hair into tight curls, used light face makeup with heavy rouge, exaggerated cipid lips and false eyelashes. Drew cracks on my face and arm and had a tied gauze bandage on one arm. Have to have a super frilly dress and cute "girly" shoes to make this costume work. Also had on white tights. Figured a broken/mended doll is a beloved toy, way better than a perfect doll that's never used.
One year my youngest son wanted to be a "Dementor" from Harry Potter so I made a long hooded cloak and sewed wire into the seams to make it look like it was floating in mid-air. We painted his face black and he wore black gloves and used roller skate tennies to enhance the floating effect. Or just go as a monster (my favorite costume). Use face paints to give your eyes a scary look by using brown or black around the eyes and then rimming with red. I like green, yellow, or white and black for the face. heavy use of black and red for wrinkles all over the face makes for a great look or paint a skull's grimace over your lips so you look like a skull even with your mouth closed Paint rest of face with white and black to complete the skull look. A demented, toothy smile (again paint over lips so teeth are huge looking) with a terrifying smile painted on with super stretched, red, smiling lips painted way up over the cheeks is simple but really creepy looking when done right. Use heavy liner and brows to balance this look. Don't forget the "cracked skin" in red or black.
So many awesome possibilities! I'm never the same thing 2 years in a row.
DH and I last year, in super fast face makeup (we had shredded clothes and ratty wigs to complete this look but got no pics of this).
I love those outdoor parties where you can run around in costume and eat tons of candy! Also, telling stories in the middle of the day has never been so scary!
For other costumes, I really want to make a Minato Arisato costume, since it gives me an excuse to listen to music that does not suit the character. (He wears headphones) He is normally a little on the emo side, so imagine your stereotypical emo in a school uniform singing "I Love Eggs" or "Cirno's Perfect Math Class."
