Handling chicks

Even the flightiest chick breeds respond to my method of taming chicks.

Some require longer to develop trust, but they all come around. Right now, I have four-four-week olds that are being cared for by a semi-broody hen, and they leave her and all jump into my lap and snuggle and go to sleep when I sit down in their run. I feel like a chick hammock.

feed them by hand and sit about with them. soon they will be pecking your feet and jumping onto your shoulder for a bit of corn. once they get to that close without frightening it's easy to move slowly with hands to pick them up (around the body and securing the wings against flapping). they might cheep a bit in surprise but should settle down, and get more used to it the more you handle.
