Oh, Aaa----meeee. Some-----body....Yep, another dumb question. Day 15. Most of eggs are dark now, but I can still see veins and movement in all 8 of them. But some of the air sacs are looking pretty doggone big to me, not that I have a ton of experience in these matters..... I've kept the humidity fairly low (I think the most it ever got up to was like 50) but I've been more comfortable in that 35-40 range because I read somewhere that with detached air cells you stand a better chance of them reattaching if the humidity isn't real high all the time, you don't turn them for a couple of days, and they are kept upright in the incubator rather than laying flat. I've done all that.![]()
Anyway, like I said today is Day 15, and I wondered if raising the humidity up a bit at this point might slow that evaporation down a bit so the chicks don't end up getting shrink wrapped because of air cells that were too big. Or is it kinda too little too late at this point? Or do I need to re-read your article again because I missed something - I ain't the brightest crayon in the box here.![]()

Chick's are usually out w/in 24 hours, but the duck people all say ducks can take up to 48. If there are prominent veins there is nothing you can do at this point w/out high risk of causing a bleed out. No matter how many hours-duck or chick- those veins need to retract, and if that isn't done, they aren't ready. So I finally had to do it since I couldn't sleep wondering if I was letting it die in there overnight. Were about 42 hours since pip and I finally had to check and see what in the heck was going on with the pipper. I opened a small hole with tweezers where the pip was and I don't know what I'm looking at. His lil beak is chattering at me with a really weak peep and is really weakly and slowly moving is mouth open and tryin to peck at the shell. He looks exhausted and I dunno if he is positioned right to get out on his own. The air sac membrane inside almost looks dried out and I was going to try and pull that sack membrane open for him but there was a big fat vein going through it. Not sure if that means I need to wait cos he's not ready or if there is supposed to be a vein in the air sack membrane or what.
He did take a couple of deep breaths which I read meant they are trying to absorb the yolk so maybe he isn't ready to come out yet. I put him back in there with the big hole in his shell and I am gonna try to get some sleep. Will he be okay with that hole I made now? Does that vein in the air sac seem right? Should I try to work him out of there or leave him be? Sooo confused and just don't know why it is taking so long when the longest I have heard an egg taking to hatch after pip is 36 hours..... We are now at 28 days and 7 hours.
I fill my water wells and use a couple sponges atop the screen of the bator at egg level.Hi! Any tips on how to raise humidity in incubator...having trouble raising humidity and what should I have it at, it is to low now
We actually had 18 shipped eggs. 2 of which started and stopped w/in 24 hours. Didn't get any farther than the "blood Island" developing. One never had development and the other I didn't think had any development but last candle it looked like it to had a red circle like the blood island guys. But in all 14 developing is excellent in my book. Now if they all make it to lockdown and hatch that would be awesome. That's amazing all the shipped silkie eggs are developing!! The others sound very promising too!
