Because the Japanese bantams carry what is called the creeper gene. It is the gene for the ideal short legs that desirable for Japanese Bantams. When you breed them, if you breed two short legged bantams 25% will result in death because of getting two copies of the gene. (It is a fatal gene.) 50% will be short legged w/1 copy of the gene and 25% will be longer legged. (Scientific averages anyway.)

If you breed a longer legged with a short legged, it'll be 50/50%

Right WVduckchick?

It's funny because WV an I were just discussing this a couple days ago. I always stated the fact based on 2 short legged mates and she brought up the scenerio of shortxlong, so I had to go and look up the probability for that scenerio.

I always forget the percentages associated with each mating, but yes, the shortest legs are most desirable for showing, but more deadly to try to breed because of the creeper gene.

Check out the Japanese thread here. Lots of knowledge folks (not to mention some beautiful pics!!)

Ok, so this looks like my last candling progression compilation collage. I can barely get anything on pic with my amateur camera. Even tried some different settings. The eggs are pretty full and pretty dark with limited open areas for enough light to pass through to catch on my cam. Days 11-15. We are now on day 16- getting close!! Can't wait!!

Well, the little SWH that was late hatching died. Poor thing, only 3 days. Started with raspy breathing last night. This morning nor moving around much, sleeping a lot. Just went to check and was laying on back with whitish liquid coming from mouth. There are times you wish Mother Nature didn't know better.
Real bummer, Linda

So sorry to hear that!

I have realized that I need to keep up with the member interviews more on here. I was just reading some of them over and realized that for a year and a half one of the old timer members that I had thought was a guy all along is a lady...Oooops.  I'm just going to consider everyone female if they have a gender neutral screen name...lol Everytime I think someone is a guy it turns out being a gal.

And vice versa!

How big of a hole should I make? Forgot to ask that in my othe post

Like Ravyn said, in the middle of the air cell. And make sure you start the hole small. I use the tip of a screw and turn until the tip of it goes into the egg. They are a lot harder then you would think. You don't want to accidentally break or crush the egg while you make the whole. Just go slow and apply even pressure. Once you get a little hole you can make it a little bigger with tweezers. Then I shine a flashlight in or hold my desk lamp right over top. If you do this please let us know what you find. Take a pic! Good luck!
