Hands on hatching and help

Hmmmm, I have that one and it's way off....like as much as 8 degrees off. Wonder why that is...... All of the others were at least together in the 90s while this one stayed in the 80s. Must have gotten a lemon. I'll get another one and try again. Ice water test doesn't work because of course it doesn't go down that far. But I'm willing to give it another shot.

Congrats on the chicks, Amy!

So tough to watch one that may not make it and there's nothing you can do.

Sorry about your back, but hope you get some good rest so you can enjoy your time away.

PS: Where is the cake picture?
It is hard. The more babying and attention I put into him the more attached I become, knowing in the end, he's probably not going to make it anyway. It's been two days since he pip into the bottom of the egg. I really thought that the yolk would absorb or at least be a bit smaller by now, but it's still the same- at least it looks it and the veining inn the bottom is still pretty red and heavy. I leave for the 'Cuse area this evening so it'll be in my sister's hands. I was hoping to have it out by then.

I am drowning in ducklings! 10 out and one more pipped, and yet another internally pipped. Seeing as how I bought 12 eggs I can't be disappointed with those numbers

That's excellent.

That little knob is a beech to barely change, isn't it? I've found with the FI, I just let it run a little low. Seems like if I try to bump it up, just the lightest bit, it goes too high, so I'd rather just let it run a little low. It fluctuates alot, according to the Spot Check, but stays in a decent range, so I try not to touch it. (I taped the cap off a hairspray bottle over the knob lol)

Serama eggs in the Brinsea will likely be hatched in the Brinsea. Even though I love the view in the FI, and I've had good hatches in it, it still just can drive me crazy.
Yep!

I'm waiting on a final malpo also. Good luck for a fun trip!
Yes, where are the cake pics? Lol
Thanks. I'm hoping for a little R&R...lol

Yes, I agree with Friday, just keep them in the brinsea. Are you able to get good humidity in the 20 for lockdown?
I just hatched almost 30 eggs in the 20! I didn't think all the ones I set would make it to lockdown but they did...talk about cramped!

(and they did fine).
I had an egg like that. Can't remember if it was malpositioned or not but it took forever and every time I checked it had huge veins, so there was abstnothing I could do. It started getting all sticky because the pip hole that it made was very large and exposed a lot of the inside of the egg. I just had to wait and wait and wait. You're doing a great job!!

Yes, cake pics, please!
Congratulations!!
I just love the looks they make with their eyes. It's almost like their facial expressions change by the look they give you. So much personality with that one in your pics! I love it! My lo got a little brave yesterday. It was time to go inside and usually when I start walking he follows and cries till I pick him up but this time he didn't want to go in and made me chase him!... He is an official teenager now.
I'm keeping the yolk and chick moistened and giving the chick drinks of electrolyte water from a q-tip. He's lively, gotten real lively in the last 24 hours, just not getting done what needs to be done.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I'll keep 'em in the Brinsea, but I think I'll keep the FI going anyway. If it looks like it's getting too rough in there, I can transfer the chicks to it and let them finish drying off without knocking everything else in the Brinsea to kingdom come.

Humidity hasn't been a big problem in the Brinsea so far. It rises and falls a bit, but there aren't any drastic swings. I calibrated the hygro using the salt/water/baggie method, and this one was easy to adjust to get it where it should be reading after several hours in the bag. Thermometers are a whole 'nuther ball game. Not one of them reads exactly the same. I've come to the conclusion that digital wireless thermometers that also show tenths of a degree just can't be calibrated accuritely. I drowned one transmitter because I forgot to put it in the Ziplock bag which was laying right next to the ice water. Did the other ones and they were all a full degree off, or more.

So if I ever do this incubating thing again, I won't do it until I find the perfect glass bulb thermometer. I'm a woman on a quest!! In the meantime, I have no clue what's happening inside those eggs right now. Hatch day isn't technically until tomorrow, so patience, Grasshoppah.

Good luck Blooie!! I'll be taking off for the weekend, but I will be checking in to see if you have hatchers!!

Ok, so the cake. My niece started dating this jerk (a year or so back) ...yeah, I don't like him, and he's a Denver Broncos fan, so of course my sweet little niece, (who I swear has never been interested in football a day in her life) became a Broncos fan and everything is Broncos now, even the baby shower theme. I don't know...I just went with what I was told, so that is why it's orange and blue.

I went through so many, I finally ordered the Brinsea Spot Check http://www.brinsea.com/p-394-spot-check-digital-incubator-thermometer.aspx

They are "supposedly" scientifically calibrated from the factory. I checked a few of mine, and by the time I figured out how high/low they all were, I confirmed the Spot Check is right on. Granted, its around $20, but to be able to look at it and know its right, without adding 3 degrees or subtracting 2.6 or whatever, I choose convenience and laziness.

The best part is that it "reads" darn-near instantly. You don't have to wait for it to settle in. I still have a couple backups, but I trust the Spot Check above them all.

Ok never had a broody before, but is she about done raising the chicks? yesterday she wnet in raising cain only let the hens laying or sitting on nests stay in the stall so her chicks could be in there, today she had them almost out to the pasture when the roo cam up pecked one of the babies lightly and she started to squat for him?
