Hands on hatching and help

I have a Hova-bator with turner. Kept at 99 but day 19 took down to 98.

Humidity was 40/50 till lockdown. It was about 72. Now it's 77. I assume cause of wet chicks.

Sigh. I just want to get this down before I waste any more money. @WVduckchick
I just realized I got the eggs from you. lol. I feel so bad I failed. But one day our electricity went out while we were gone. No telling how long it was.

I filled the Eco 20 with 30 silkie eggs, laying flat. Figured I would pull some along the way but nope everyone made it to lockdown. Talk about a crowded hatch!!
I know about the crowded Hatches---LOL This is a basic hatch----I never took a pic of the trays LOADED--Hatch

So my lone silkie egg left over from a broody hatch finally hatched! It was pipped for exactly 40 hours before hatching. The longest pip I've ever had! I checked it here and there and could see the little beak and that it was breathing so I just left it alone. And sure enough it zipped and hatched all on its own. Knew that egg was not ready! It was a good reminder that we give advice to the best of our abilities but it's really hard to know exactly what to do unless we can see it in person.
YAY!! I have to tell you, girl, I envy your patience. I could NOT wait 40 hours without messing...lol

Wow. Love this!! Thank you so much.
Welcome to the thread!

@Amy Lynne Ok...so glad someone led me to this thread. Yippie

I'm New to hatching and my son wants to breed chickens for a business. And let's just say we are not off to the best start. All eggs shipped and less then half hatch rate.

We are on our 2nd hatch now and only 3 of over 2 dozen have hatched. 2 with our help. And they don't look good either. Maybe we should have left them alone. Ugh.

Today is day 21 and I am so sad. I have other eggs still in with no pip and I know some were alive at day 18 candle but not much movement.

I removed the healthy chick (Rosecomb). But the two golden sebrights I left in. I put in grow gel but they show no interest. Just hobbled away from it. ...Sigh

Any help would be great.

Shipped eggs are a risk all the way around. I have never used Gro Gel. I add sav a chick to my water. Usually w/in a few hours of being put in the bator they are drinking and getting teh extra vits and electrolytes.

Do you monitor your air cells at all? If you aren't doing bantams/silkie eggs and aren't in a high altitude, I'd suggest a lower humidity around 30% and watch the air cells to adjust. Of course that's harder to do with shipped eggs if they have wonky air cells. I use this method: http://letsraisechickens.weebly.com...anuals-understanding-and-controlling-humidity

That makes me itch with anxiety. I could never have that many chicks crammed in a hatcher. Even when I first started hatching before I started removing them as they hatched, I got up to 7 or 8 and it was just too crowded and that's in a LG.

You can have some of my broodies if you like! Lol. ;)
X2
You want to put a hole in the air sac for the one that pipped upside down (malpositioned)? Just make sure that he can breathe through the pip he made at the wrong side/end. That one might need assistance come hatch time.
Oh congrats!! So cute!
I'm so sorry that he didn't make it! That's really sad but I saw the pics of the new babies and they are so cute!!
That's so sad!! At least you put most inside andd is a great job hatching them!

Oh my goodness talk about locked and loaded lol. I have quite a few silkie eggs too but they won't be moved to the brinsea until next week since it's full right now lol

Oh boy id be worried that one would get smothered.. I had that happen in one of my brooder one time with just 3. I felt so awful... :(

40/50 was probably a bit high for those eggs, but maybe not in your area. Shipped eggs are always a gamble, so it may not be anything you did. I have the following weeks eggs from the same hens in my incubator right now doing great.

The wet chicks will raise the humidity and that's fine. As they dry, it will come back down, doesn't affect the eggs much.

The chicks dont need grow gel or anything to eat right now, they will be fine, so dont worry about that either.

Any more pips?

I love this thread too. Everyone is so great and super helpful.

and I love the philosophy here! I raise seramas and I hate to say it but I do have to assist frequently and constantly check progress while they are hatching. I like that you guys can understand that here!

Hubby just noticed another pip. I am shocked. We opened that thing way too many times this hatch. sigh

Thanks so much for the help.
