Hands on hatching and help

Help! My chick as externaly pipped the wrong place in the egg? The small pip is not in the air bubble area. It's on the side of the egg and slightly nearest the pointy side?? It chirped a few minutes ago but no movement. Is there anything I need to do and will it be ok?

How slanted was the air cell before lockdown? The air cell draws down considerably, it could still be have pipped into it. But usually once they've pipped externally, its best to just wait and see if it will zip on its own, since its getting air now.

What do you guys like humidity at for lock down in standard birds?

68-72% is my aim

Ugh this is a very difficult situation. I would give it a 50/50 chance. When a chick pips the wrong end you are supposed to count that as an internal pip. Give it 12 to 24 hours then count it as the external pip then after another 12 to 24 hours it may need assistance hatching. If you go to the backyard search section you can type in hatching guide and their is a how to for this situation. It was a life saver for me!!

As long as the yolk is absorbed and the egg has lost enough moisture so that it doesn't drown, malpositioned chicks have a good chance of hatching healthy. Some malpositioned pippers hatch just fine on their own, others will need assistance if they are going to make it out alive. I make sure malpos have a clear hole to breath through and where I can monitor to make sure they are alive and periodically moving, then I give them 24 hours before starting an assist, going only as far as I can until I see veining or blood. Then I replace them and give them more time.

Well I have 2 jubilee orpingtons that have internally pipped. Tomorrow is day 21. It's also my birthday. It's neat to get a hatch on my birthday. These 2 will be special for sure lol. :) tomorrow I also have some ameraucanas and some jubilee's going into lockdown. They are due friday. Hopefully they hatch ok. :) wish me luck. I really want these ameraucanas.. :)

right after writing this they both externally pipped so might not make it to my birthday lol. My husband got me a variety of orpington hatching eggs I've been drooling over so I'm still excited. I'll be happy to turn 25 again hehe..

Good luck - maybe one will hold off until after midnight!! When it comes to birthdays, Ma used to tell us to find an age we liked and stick with it! I'm a very contented 2 year old.

Happy birthday! One of my broodies hatched all 4 of her eggs on my birthday a couple of weeks ago. :)
