Hands on hatching and help

For a few months @RubyNala97
and I have talked about having a thread for Hands on Hatchers to come together and for help for those who want to be more involved or don't want to accept the "Never help a chick" theory.  People have different methods of hatching, and that's ok. When you find something that works for you, you do it. Don't worry about what other's views are, as long as your method is working- that is what is important. This thread is meant for us hands on people.  A place to come together and talk, exchange our "hands on" methods, or seek help in assisting or just to see how our methods really do work for us. We aren't a thread to debate the differences for hands on/hands off, there's a thread for that. We are strictly for people  that want to experience hatching in it's entirety w/out being literally yelled at because you are doing it different or because you are being hands on. OH no you opened your incubator at hatch???  That's ok, here we understand and will help anyone who needs it regardless of wether you did something we wouldn't. One of the greatest and most knowledgeable things is candling, and you shouldn't be afraid to do it.

A little about myself: I use an old LG incubator with fan attatchement, and I have awesome hatches. My last was 100%. I prefer a low humidity incubation method, and a high hatch humidity. I am VERY hands on. I open my incubator frequently during hatch and I have NEVER lost a chick that has pipped or started zipping. I seldom have post hatch mortality and my chicks are very healthy with no leg problems. And I am more than willing to assist my chicks if I feel it is neccessary. Why am I saying this? Because these are the things that a lot of hands off hatchers will swear to you will happen if you are not hands off. I respect a hands off hatchers philospohies and that's great for them. But I hate the fact that some would condem and put down those of us that don't share their philosophy. So if you are looking for a place to share your experiences and excitment in being hands on, without the worry of being scolded or threatened you won't be helped in a time of need, feel free to jump in and inroduce yourselves. Tell us a little about your methods and share pics of your flocks and chicks.
I love this, thank you. I am anxiously awaiting the hatch of my egg from Trader Joes. 10 day's to go. I candle it alot because watching it move around is so cool

Extra fluid in 4 of 6 of the eggs, they were end up for the first 17 days and then on their side after that. Only one pipped, none hatched. Local eggs. I broke open all the eggs once I know they were dead and none of them had their head by the air hole except the one that pipped

It sounds like to me, high humidity the first 17 days. High humidity results in drowning at hatch time, but it also results in larger chicks that are unable to turn so you have higher instances of malpositioned. What was your humidity the first 17 days? I highly recommend a low humidity incubation, and monitoring air cells. I use 30% for standard eggs and make changes depending on the air cell. More often than not I can achieve this running dry until lockdown.

Good luck! It's awesome seeing the progression of growth.

Well i need some guidance. I have 4 eggs left over from my hatch. It is day 23 for them. 7 hatched just fine with the last one hatching very early on Sunday morning. I candled the left over eggs and do not see any movement. My humidity is now having a hard time staying above 60. While the others were hatching it was at 62-65.

Do i leave them or do I open them up and see why they didn't hatch?

How do I open them? Whats the best technique you use?

Thank you for all the help.

Do you see any internal pips when you candle? If not its not likely they will hatch. I try to wait as long as I can to open them if no pip just to be on the safe side. If you do open them up I always start at the top of the egg where the air cell is. I peel the shell off the top and the outer membrane. I always leave the inner membrane just incase the chick is alive and just hasn't pipped yet. I mostly the inner membrane with vaseline and look for veining or fluid. I try to locate the beak and watch for movement. If there is a lot of veining I put it back in the incubator and wait. If it still hasn't made an internal pip you can make a slight hole in the inner membrane but honestly helping before the dis an internal pip has low survival rate. If you think your temps could have been low I would give it another day. Good luck

Agree with jennifer, but would also add if the air cell isn't drawn down, it's most likely that they are gone. Candle and check the air cell first, then proceed slowly. Good luck!
