Hands on hatching and help

So following my last cpl messy hatches w/ my new cabinet bator (one set dried out and one super wet way more than usual DIS and even deformed) I called the manufacturer to trouble shoot. I'm a total ding ding even tho it wasn't anywhere in the info/directions the vents on the back weren't open and it was too close to the wall. So I resolved these issues so I thought only to have a horrible hatch AGAIN! Granted the shipping wasn't the best (po not packing) but still I lost 14 before lockdown either blood ring no development or early deaths before day 14. Now w/ 12 in lockdown 4 hatched perfect no issues. The rest

UGG I ended up getting 3 more out w/ some assistance one seriously has no eye and a scissor/funky beak. Another I had opened had only the bottom beak the top was MIA so weird. They were in the bator maybe 5-7 days when I resolved the ventilation issues temp around 100 auto turn humidity 20-40 depending on when I add water that's not as stable as I would like it seems harder to regulate in the wood than it is in the plastic bators... I'm just super frustrated/venting I was hoping someone might have some idea suggestions I will try whatever I have Araucana eggs in as I thought I had fixed the issue grrrr these are for my breeding program

I will try ANYTHING!!! Thank you as always for everyone's consistent help and patience glad I missed the drama. I have helped so many of my own chicks as well as other ppl with the help from ppl on here. And @ Pyxis can you please bring one duck in diapers to chickenstock

Hmmmm. I am just going to share my story with you. I built the incubator and hatcher you can see in my pic---from the first run--first plug in with them---The incubator run for 17 months---the hatcher 4 days a week---my lowest hatch rate was 95% but I figured out what happen that time and got back to 98 to 100%----that's fertile/good eggs. Over 6200 eggs was hatched during that time----then I shut down for a few months only hatching some peachick eggs and a few chicken eggs every once and a while---now at this time I am hatching about 75 to a 100 per week. What brand of cabinet do you have?

I've never used a cabinet incubator so I'm virtually useless there, but I will say the majority of people that I talk to that do seem to have better hatches at 45/50% in cabinets.

Typey, how close to SQ type they are... Calls not only have super short hills, but super short necks which makes pipping and zipping more difficult depending on how short both of those are... like these... took these pics at the Knoxville Dixie Classic show...

One of the exhibitors was only able to hatch 3 Calls total last year...

Glad I wasn't tonfar off.

I've read beak problems are usually inherited but can also be from temps getting to high.

So I helped a chick hatch as this is DAY 26! This is the last chick and 4 days later than the other 5 that hatched. She pipped 34 hours prior too me helping. I chipped away at the shell and membrane was dry so I started applying antibiotic ointment to soften it up and then peeled it away. The chick freed itself the rest of the way from the membrane from there. That was 4 and a half hours ago. No bleeding at all. The chick's down has started to try to dry and it is kind of crunchy. Also it seems very weak. It is moving around and chirping loudly but not walking yet. It gets flipped on it's back and has trouble turning back over. It's feet look like they were squished in there and the chick can't straighten them yet. Is there anything I can do to help it? Will the "crunchy" down hurt it?

Being that energetic is a good sign. It should draw in soon.

And if I may make a suggestion... get some rubber shelf liner from the dollar store and put a layer on the bottom, next time you incubate. Those wire shelves are tough on chicks. Legs fall through and get stuck, etc. And the shelf liner is definitely softer for one with an open navel.

Xs 2 and makes clean up of the bator much easier!

Do you put the liner in right before lockdown?

I'd be very surprised if a day 26 hatcher wasn't weak, especially one pipped for 34 hours. The farther from day 21 you get the less chance of having healthy strong chicks. The crunchy down won't hurt as long as it's not hindering movement, gumming up eyes, nose or beak. You can give sav a chick electrolyte enhanced water or nutri drench to try to help with strength. If the feet haven't I curled by morning I would put sandals on it.

I don't use an automatic turner so I have the liner in from day one. When I used the turner, the liner went in at lockdown after removing the turner and filling the water wells.

Crunchy down won't hurt it, you can worry about cleaning that off later once chick is stronger... search chick shoes for the curled feet...

When I run my Call eggs, I have it in the whole time... :)

Thanks! One of my incubators has the metal screen floor and one had plastic, so I want to get a liner in them! I am also the one incubating at high altitude so I am fighting to keep humidity up and adding water a lot

50-55% and so far seems to be going better than last year! Air cells not looking too big and can see veins! Going to candle in 3 days and will post my air cells for day 10 for help!
