Hands on hatching and help

One of my Ayams pipped through a blood vessel and it bled for a bit and has stopped but it has not progressed any further....it's starting to turn brown..but I think that it's just the old blood. It pipped about 5 to 7 hours ago. I don't plan to touch it until tomorrow. I just want any advice you guys might have with a pip like this. TIA!

How's My favorite little Eskimo? Depends on how much blood was lost .It should hatch on it's on . You have the piped end higher yes ? And your watching life sign right . You know me I'm a crack it open and pull that sucker out kinda guy . You've been doing this long enough you know all the signs and what to do when the time comes . Good luck with the chick

It's a nearly brand-new Reptipro 6000 [I think that's the number], I just got it for Christmas and it has successfully hatched one batch of chickens. I'm not sure of the heating element, or if there was instability with the temperature before as I only just got another thermometer/hydrometer this time for the emus due to their humidity needs being different from those of chickens. The instability was then confirmed with another thermometer, however the actual egg temperatures seem more constant -I got a infrared temperature gauge to test them with- and a slightly low set temperature coupled with a blanket over the front of the incubator [all air vents are at the back] seems to help even more. I've heard from one other user that Reptipro incubators do tend to vary around the temperature they're set at, and this person says it does not seem to affect their hatch rates too much. I hope it's the same for mine. In contrast, my now several years old Brinsea Mini Advance is usually perfectly on temperature, and beeps annoyingly if it gets more than a degree or two off -it was attached to the top of a box as a makeshift brooder for the chick I let my friend hatch in it, beeped essentially the entire time it was used for that. At least we know it works well.

I was wondering how your incubation was going . Sounds like couple of days more . I read and posted on your introduction thread and I'm glad you found this thread . It is a good thread and has a lot of very knowledgeable members on it or that drop in from time to time . Now that don't include me though .

So hatch results in a couple of days ?
Yep yep! Someone in there is singing me the song of her PEEPle.

So we are moving right along.

I'm not familiar with that incubator . Make sure that your incubator is sealing tight when closed . That really sounds like its getting to much air.
Just took a look at your incubator model . I think you should check the door gasket to be sure it's a good fit and sealing properly . Try taking a sheet of printer paper and see if you can slip it between the door gasket and cabinet with the door closed . If there is a gap at the top it would allow the heated air to escape and cause such a problem .

One of mine does this yesterday. Should be fine if it's not to much blood! Unfortunately mine pipped through a big vein and didn't make it

Hi all, feeling terrible. mine was pipping (since Tuesday) no progress, then the membrane turned yellow and crusty, so i peeled a bit of the shell away and it looked good, then peeled gently another bit away and there was atone bit of blood which i put some cornflour on as the instructions say. I then popped it back in the incubator with a day towel and now it looks a bit shivery? It's awful not knowing what to do. I read the assisted hatching information lots of times and as this is my first time, i don't know whether to just leave them and let nature take over like my husband says or whether to help if they are in trouble. I have placed too much of my heart on these babies and as a first hatch it has been very hard. We are three days over, and i feel lost and very tearful. Sorry to butt in x

Did you mean to type you wrapped a wet paper towel around it? I would take that off, a lot of us here feel that it's likely to cause a chill, and since you said yours is even looking shivery, it sounds like it is.

Instead, to keep things moist apply some Vaseline, neosporin, or coconut oil to the membranes.

Can you post a picture of what's going on and what you've done so far?

Hope this works. it isn't very clear due to the humidity. There seems to be membrane at the top of the beak area and surrounding to body. I am a bit of a mess and don't know what to do. Sorry if it sounds ridiculous

It doesn't sound ridiculous at all :hugs

So, this duckling has been pipped since Tuesday? Do you know what time? They can be very slow and can take up to 48 hours to finish absorbing everything after external pip, sometimes even longer. Since you saw blood, for now we just need to give it time.

Is it making yawning or chewing motions? That is a sign it is still absorbing. When it's ready to come out, it will start struggling like crazy.

You also say you are three days over hatch day, what day did you set them? Also, are you using a still air or forced air incubator, and what have your temps been like?
