I start assisting at 24 hours. If it's malpositioned in the pointed end you may not be ble to do much more than widen the pip hole, because there might still be prominent veing at the bottom. You can start though and that will let you asses the chick's position better, but if there are still thick veins, stop and give him more time.

Thank you!! I made the hole a little bigger, did see some veins so I stopped. Hoping it can do the rest on its own!

Lots of CHEEPING going on in the bator! Day 20
Got up at 5:30 to go to work and two ameraucana had pipped. A third one has since I left (my husband texted me) so hopefully we will get some zipping and hatching in the next 24 hours.
The pips are all in ameraucana eggs only right now, I felt like they might start first as the eggs are much smaller than the light Sussex and Marans ones. I'm not even sure if that is a "thing" but I'm sticking to it lol
Will post up more pictures when we get more action!!
Good job!! Congrats. Love the pic!Update: today is Day 19, and I have five 8 hour old chicks in the brooder and 3 pips in the remaining eggs. I had to assist one chick that got stuck during zipping, (she was very, very ready) she is lively now and the sticky stuff that got her stuck is mostly off. Fingers crossed for the rest of the eggs.....![]()
Lucky, the assisted chick at 2 hours old

I'd give them 24 hours and candle just to see how they looked. I definitely wouldn't give up. If her temps have been where they are supposed to be for the first week, and her humidity is good, I bet she'll still have hatchers.I got an email from someone in my canning group on facebook. She wanted to know if her hatch was going to make it. She says her chicken eggs have been in the bator for about a week. She went to bed last night bator was at 101, woke up this morning and bator was at 85. She thinks the cat bumped the cord. She doesn't know how long the temp dropped. She has since got her temp back up. I told her she might as well keep in there and see what they look like at day 14. Any advice guys?
On a side note: 16 out of 28of my chicks have hatched, one big pip, and one zip in the bator right now. Some have nothing going on. Today is the actual hatch day. Do you ever help them pip? If so when?
Thanks guys.
