Hands on hatching and help

Okay, question on the Brinsea Oct 20.....last night I put the 5 eggs from the FI into the Brinsea to finish incubation. It had 3 other eggs in it. I had pulled 18 eggs between the 2 incubators for blood rings, clears, etc. Now I can't seem to get the temps in the Brinsea stable, which wasn't a problem before. With the removal of 8 dud eggs and the replacement with 5 good eggs, that temp will not go above 96.8, whereas before it held 99.5 steady. (Two thermometers besides the built in) Is it the difference in mass? Is it something I did? I know I can adjust (making minuscule changes) the dial inside the top, but I hate to do that if patience would see that temp stabilize. It'll be 24 hours around 9 pm tonight.

See! It's happening!! So how many eggs do you have all together?

I had 6 that were supposed to go into the hatcher but 2 turned out to be quitters. So I've got 4 in the hatcher now and after coming back from town I found pip number 3 and the entire egg rocking back and forth! Just waiting on one egg now to pip and I am pretty sure it is the one egg in there that was put in the incubator a day after all the rest so that one should be behind anyways.

I then have 15 blue/chocolate runner ducks in a Brinsea Octagon incubator. In my Lyon I currently have ten ancona ducks due in 8 days, 20 blue/chocolate runner duck eggs and 1 blue palm turkey egg from the yard. So, I guess all together I have 50 eggs in right now. The runners and anconas were shipped so I do expect more to die or quit on me. I started with 18 anconas and I've already lost 8.

Mine did something like this once. I would say crank it up a half degree and give it least 9hours to stabilize..but this is not advice just saying what I'd try..

P.s. might seem silly but I always miss the most obvious,,is the lid securely closed? Did the thermometers get bumped,sometimes if they get too messed with mine stop working.

P.s. might seem silly but I always miss the most obvious,,is the lid securely closed? Did the thermometers get bumped,sometimes if they get too messed with mine stop working.

Good call. I've missed putting the top on all the way, especially the back section. Always have to double check if it's seated in the notches.

Just looked at your FB page.  What area of Ohio are you in? 

We're in Pickaway County, about 45 minutes out from Columbus

OMG!!! Woke up and found significant progress on our pipped duckling.  So I played him a video and he hatched right before my eyes!!!!  So exciting.  Still no pips on the other three though so maybe this lil guy can talk the other ones outta coming out too.  It's only halfway through day 27 so they have plenty of time.

I'm going to crack 2 call eggs today too. They had veins and moving embryos but not anymore. The veins are all receded and they're not coming back! Does the breed of duck your hatching take 28 days? You know once you start collecting eggs again and wait to set them all together you're going to see how much easier it is!!
I'm considering getting the still air hova, how do you like it?
Yup, I was all set up for spring too. The last two days have been a pain in the butt! My silkies have no problem going in and out of the coop all day long but once the sun starts going down they all pile up on the floor of the run and I have to go out there and pick each one up and put them to bed. It's so annoying! Why don't they just go to bed?! I could never get an automatic door or they would be left out all night.
Yes, about 1-2 degree variance between top and bottom. On my first hatch in there some liquid had seperated from the thermometer while it was being shipped to me and I accidentally ran 101 the whole hatch. The chicks came early but it was a good hatch. I fixed the thermometer and ran 99.5 this last hatch (my second in the 20) and the hatch dragged out for 3 full days!! Next time I'm going to run 100.5. I also do not like the rails and cradle. Next time I'm laying the eggs flat and hand turning. I have call duck eggs coming next week!! And I'll prob add some of my own eggs, as much as I can fit.
We are frozen too! And I like to run on the hot side too. With my silkie eggs I run, on an average at least 50%. It goes up to 55% all the time. And the air cells grow great! I swear! I'm all for low humidity incubation and it really makes sense...sometimes I feel so "wrong" for running it so high but I can't argue with the results!! Lol.
Congrats on your first baby!! I don't get anything done around the house during hatch time! Even though I could my mind is to distracted, all I can think about is what's happening in the incubator! And yes, that baby will definitely encourage the others to come out. It's having a real life YouTube video playing right inside the incubator.

Oh you're incubating Calls!!! Love those! I've been wanting ducks but my husband isn't quite on board with that...yet lol.
As far as the Hova still air goes, I've really had good results with it! I'm a stay at home mom so I didn't opt for the auto turner. I hand turn 5x a day. My only issue is that when we've got the wood burning stove going, I get some big fluctuations in temps. During the day my house gets really toasty and the bator can get in the 103-104 range which I try to very carefully dial it down but it rarely helps. Then at night it drops to 99. Then I fight low humidity 25% and that's lower than I like. But it's easy to clean and sanitize between hatches and if I'm not using the wood stove it holds temp pretty well. It's also great as a hatcher
My Brinsea doesn't seem to care what the ambient temp is. It holds rock steady and never gets below 30% humidity in the same room as the Hova. The crazy thing is, I only paid $25 for my Brinsea- the Hovabator was $60

Day 26 here, cant wait till the hatch us actually in progress. my temperature got up to 101 F while i was at work.
My house is very dry here so I'm still misting a couple times a day, & there's a cup with wet spinge in incubator of course.
I did this last summer too, but since tgevotger egg quit on me 2 weeks in, I'm a mess this time.
What are thechances of this eggy not making it?

I'm new to this, but from my experience with the disaster my first hatch went through, I bet you are fine. Out of 9 eggs that I started with I am down to 4, one of which has already hatched and 2 more that are pipped. Throughout the first 10 days I had temp fluctuations that ranged from 96-106 degrees thanks to my cruddy FI incubator. I lost 3 during that crazy period. I then managed to get a rock solid Lyon Incubator that has held the temp exactly where I set it for almost 3 weeks now and on day 10 I put the remaining 6 eggs in. Of those 6, two more quit on me a few days ago. So, all together if the other 3 eggs hatch, I still had a pretty good hatch rate considering how much stress they were subjected to early on.

Plus, I am now using that FI incubator to hatch cos I don't have room for them anywhere else. My temp has consistently ran 101-102 in a spot in the incubator that the duckling that hatched was sitting, and then found a cold spot of 94.3 where one of the pipped eggs is sitting, yet they havn't died yet, even though they've been in there for a couple days. My guess is that you still have a pretty good chance that the egg never even noticed the temp change and will hatch just fine. Those chicks seem to be a lot tougher than I thought they were thanks to all the scary stuff ya read about happening to them on the internet, lol.
