Hands on hatching and help

How wide do I make the hole? I know to stop if there is blood, of course. What is a good position - is it fine as long as I see it's head? Also - the 2nd egg finally externally pipped. Will opening the incubator to help the first one shrink wrap the second?

Here is our new Peacock. The three hens came running over to check him out as soon as we pulled him out of the car and have not left his side since. They are purring and grooming each other through the chain link fence. I've never seen birds be so sweet. He's a beautiful bird but you can see there are a few broken feathers he got from traveling here. Wish I would have taken pictures sooner when the sun was out. His entire neck is incandescent purple when the sun is shining on him. Beautiful bird.







And here is our resident a-hole Mr. Puffles trying to attack the new peacock through the fence. He has been such a brat lately. The turkey hens are laying on eggs so he has been attacking everyone and anything new that comes into our yard, lol.



And now he is in "jail" in the little fence behind the new peacock's cage.....

So my hatch is over. 14 of 15.

One golden sebright DIS, after drawdown, so I'll open it later to see what happened.

I was worried about the last LO, it had been internally pipped for probably 48 hours, so I drilled a safe hole around 9:00 last night. It was still rocking when I went to bed at midnight, but had not pipped itself. Got up at 6:00 and it had hatched. I pieced the egg back together and it did use my safe hole to start zipping, so I'm glad I did it. Not sure it needed it, but it was successful anyway.

Final count 2/2 lavender orpington
4/4 silver duckwing OEGB
8/9 golden sebright

Lol, it sounds bad but it is my old xbox one profile name. We have a dachshund named Weenie and she used to be rather fat so that's where the name came from. She's lost about 4 lbs and looks really healthy now. She still does all her tricks though, which is how she got to be so fat.... Couldn't resist her Puss in Boots, puppy dog eyes she gives ya.

Wow they are gorgeous! Are you going to hatch some of their eggs eventually? BWM work for you?? I always imagined John Deere, big green machines.... Lol

So, end of day 29 (ducks) and the 22.5 hours after external pip I made the pip hole bigger to check on position. I added a small amount of olive oil around the opening with a q-tip so it doesnt dry out. Her (calling it a her) beak was right where the pip was - she hasn't turned to zip at all. I put her back in the incubator and will give her more time. There was a teeny tiny amount of blood at the edge of where the air sac was and it stopped right away (nothing against where the air sac was) so I didnt take off more shell.

Where she's breathing comfortably, I'm guessing the right thing to do is put her back and give her more time? her beak is sticking out of the shell - I cant see her tucking it back in to turn around, and where she already didnt turn I'm thinking she probably wont zip...

Thoughts?

Personally, I give ducks at least 40 hours before doing any assisting. I've had them take over 48 with no problems at all. According to Storeys Guide, they can need those 2 days to fully absorb the yolk. I think they just need the air sooner than chicks do. Day 29 is late of course, but if your temps were a bit low, I wouldn't be alarmed. I've also had ducks go to day 32 (although I had a long power outage with those)
