Hands on hatching and help

A few pics of my single DIS baby from the weekend:

Drawn down.

These were after the incubator had been turned off for 24 hours.

Had not internally pipped.

Still moist, not shrinkwrapped (even 24+ hours later). The only thing I saw was that its wing was down, and not up over the beak. The straight blue line on the pic above shows me the "up" position, in case they get rolled, so the beak was where it was supposed to be, in relation to the drawdown point, and where it "should" have pipped the shell.

Fully formed

but much yolk unabsorbed. (sorry, this pic wasn't great, but didn't have a better one of the yolk)

I think it just gave up the fight.

If anyone sees anything suspicious, please let me know. I think it just gave up.

Sorry to hear you're sick! Sending healing vibes. I'm very appreciative that you've been answering my anxious questions! So worried about these little guys.

I'm worried about all of the eggs. USPS lost the shipping box and I couldnt get them in the incubator until they were ~13 days post lay. 3 of the 6 didnt make it, so I feel like Im already working with eggs that might have issues.

Egg #1 has a hole made post-external-pip by me, and is breathing easily and just sitting around, absorbing whats left (I can see some thin veining left, so it obviously isnt ready). It never turned around though, I expect to help it out tomorrow if the veining is gone.

Egg #2 piped this morning, but nothing since 7am (I know this is normal, Im less worried since the other one did it and obviously wasnt ready)

#3 hasnt exterally piped still hasnt. I candled it and it's moving and tapping away, Im 85% sure it internally pipped. We're on the night of day 29 - should I make a hole and then cover it with a wet paper towel to see what's up or just leave it be? Maybe tomorrow morning if there's still 0 progress?

So Im feeling like a smarty pants this morning. All along one of the eggs has had a giant air sac while the other two have been normal. I told my husband I bet that one wouldnt be able to turn property since it has so little space in there. It pipped somewhere between 11:30pm and 6:30am (this morning is day 30), and it pipped away from the air sac against the ground. It was still alive but the pip didnt push through the membrane which was tan, so I made it a small breathing hole. It seems smaller than the other one - not sure how this will go, but I expect I will be helping it out when it's ready but understand fully it might not make it. I re-moisened the wet paper towels in the incubator and around the new hole and put her back in right side up. She took a few quick and deep breaths as soon as I make the hole and is now breathing normally - I expect she was short on air.

Thank you! I could see veining still, so even tough its day 30 (gah!) it's back in the incubator while I wait for it to finish up absorbing everything it needs.

I helped egg #1 out - the veins were no longer visible and she was trying to shift around and couldnt get anywhere for a few hours. She came out with her yolk absorbed and she had even pooped in her shell, I dont think she could have gotten out on her own. She is trying to walk around and bumping into the other eggs with bright open eyes :) Fingers crossed she gets stronger! She looks good for now. :)

Egg #2 started zipping

Pretty sure egg #3 is stuck in in there but needs more time (has an air hole and Im leaving it be until the veins are gone).

So my hatch is over. 14 of 15.

One golden sebright DIS, after drawdown, so I'll open it later to see what happened.

I was worried about the last LO, it had been internally pipped for probably 48 hours, so I drilled a safe hole around 9:00 last night. It was still rocking when I went to bed at midnight, but had not pipped itself. Got up at 6:00 and it had hatched. I pieced the egg back together and it did use my safe hole to start zipping, so I'm glad I did it. Not sure it needed it, but it was successful anyway.

Final count 2/2 lavender orpington
4/4 silver duckwing OEGB
8/9 golden sebright

:weee

Hi guys.
Been busy running around today like a,,,, uh well you guys know.

Out of 31possible eggs. Pulled two clears today. Inspected-weren't fertile.(yolks still intact upon opening) Down to 29. I can't emotionally handle pulling more then so many at a time....bear with me!
Hope everyone's having a good day&congrats on all the pips&peeps!

What's the percent of good hatching on buff Japanese bantams? I had eight eggs in the incubator but only 2 were good. They are suppose to hatch any day now any tips on what to do? I have hatched chicks out before but never Japanese bantams. I have turkey eggs in their also but still turning those should I separate the bantam eggs so the incubator isn't being opened to turn them or are they fine? They should be hatching out Wednesday to Friday

First, I know this is a hatching forum but is anyone watching Bates Motel tonight? Can you tell I'm excited!?! :D
Hey, Ruby! I'm sorry you have been sick! I can so sympathize with the no smoking thing....I had a heart attack in February and stents put in. I did really well with no smoking when I first got home, and that lasted a couple of days. Shoot, been smoking since I was 13 and I'm 65 now, so that's a long, long time!! (and NO lectures, peanut gallery. We've heard 'em all! ;) ) So I had to try one more time. Been almost a month, and I absolutely still miss it as much today as I did the first day. So if you decide this is truly it this time (and ask me how many "this times" I've had in 52 years), grab my hand and we'll walk this tough road together. If you decide not to, that's okay too! I may end up not getting through this myself!
Sorry to hear about your heart attack! Yes, I'm ready. I've been feeling so guilty the past few months. My children don't know I smoke and I'm always sneaking around outside to get a couple drags. I feel like I'm lying to them just to end up killing myself and cutting my time short with them. I know that sounds dramatic but it's a fact! Summer is coming (eventually...can't tell by our cold weather) and that always makes it harder to sneak around because they play outside. I'm just ready to not be enslaved by this addiction any longer. I know if I try hard enough I can do it! I would love your support! The e-cig has been working incredibly well. I'm hoping if I can stay off the real ones for a couple weeks then I can cutback on the e-cig. :fl Ps...we can do this!!
Thank you Ruby. That's what I was thinking. I will give it a few days. Hope you get to feeling better Linda
How's it doing today?
Get feeling better! Good job on the cigs!. This last time I went 3 months before it all went to "heck". Then after the deal with the taxes, and the transmission going on my car and not having a vehicle...yeah, back at it! So dissapointed in myself.
Thank you! You can do it when the time is right! Any luck with a new car?

Thank you! And trust me 3/6 for lost, shipped, old eggs is incredible!
Ruby and Blooie, good luck. I know how you guys feel with the cigs. I have now went 1 year, 7 months, and 7 days without a cigarette or any kind of nicotine. I smoked for 17 years and finally kicked the habit after trying dozens and dozens of times. Not to rain on your parade, but the cravings never completely go away..... I crave one at least 3 or 4 times a week. I actually want one really bad right now since I'm thinking of it. My late father, after having quit for 24 years said he still had cravings whenever he smelled one or saw someone smoking one. It sucks and I feel your pain. Hang in there though because it is so worth it to kick the habit. I was just talking to my wife the other day about how glad I am that I don't smoke anymore. 99% of the time it is great to be a non-smoker... You just have to power through the 1% when you get those nasty cravings. So Ruby, the peahens are only a year old. So from what I've researched they won't be able to lay viable eggs until they reach two years old. I definitely want to try and hatch some next year though. They have such curious and unique personalities for being birds and I am just amazed by them. Like today when I first brought the male in. With ducks or turkeys or chickens there is always some type of power play or pecking order ritual in which someone is gonna get beaten on by someone else. With the peacocks though, they immediately bonded and were purring and grooming each other through the fence. Such unique birds. I have watched them chase each other around like they're playing tag throughout the yard. God forbid I pull a trailer or anything new into the yard because the second something new shows up they have to come and investigate and climb all over it to see what it is. Extremely fun to watch no matter what they are doing! Anyways though, any special tips about hatching peacock eggs??? How much more difficult are they to hatch than ducks? I think my bacterial infection had to have come from one of 2 things. The previously mentioned humidity issue in which I think my hygrometer could have went haywire when I cleaned it and got hydrogen peroxide on the sensor. Or, perhaps there was a previously unknown bacteria growing up inside the fan unit from a hatch the previous owner did not clean completely out. When I acquired that incubator, I was in such a hurry to get the eggs from my FI bator into the new Lyon bator. I sprayed and wiped down every surface I could get to with hydrogen peroxide and then stuck the eggs in once the temp looked consistent. However, I prob should have sprayed some hydrogen peroxide up into the fan and ran the bator full of a high humidity concoction of hydrogen peroxide air in order to clean out all the components in the machine. Dunno for sure, but I am guessing it's the humidity problem since all the embryos looked fine before I raised the humidity in the Lyon to keep the air sacs from shrinking too much. The ancona eggs are due to go into lockdown tomorrow morning so I will update on any movement when I candle and stick them into the hatcher tomorrow......
10 years ago I quit cold turkey for 5 years! It was great! But then I went through a divorce and picked it back up with a vengeance! I keep telling myself if I did it once, I can do it again!! Thank you for the encouragement! My neighbor has a ton of peafowl. They are gorgeous birds. That's where I got the eggs. Being local really was a bonus. I've never hatched ducks (I'm trying calls now) so I can't compare. There's a ton of great forums here on BYC under "peafowl" that really helped me. I laid them down and hand turned. They weren't that hard. But I did have to do my first assist ever, on the first pea egg to pip. It was totally malpositioned but ended up a beautiful, healthy girl! The hard part is really after they hatch! Oh my goodness....they need a LOT of attention and imprint very easy. They would scream their heads off every time I walked out of the room and they couldn't see me. I posted a video of it here on BYC from my old phone. Maybe it's on my page? Then they start flying by 5 days old! They would fly right out of the brooder and land on my shoulders or right on top of my head. They wouldn't go to bed at night until I put them to sleep...I'm not even remotely exaggerating! I had to make it part of my nighttime routine. They would be tired and want to go to sleep so they would start crying incessantly until I picked them up, wrapped them in a blanket and petted them till they fell asleep. Then I would lay them in the brooder (still in the blanket) trying not to move, waiting to pull my arm out so I wouldn't wake them. It was totally NUTS!! They really need/want a "mom". By 4 months old I was more then ready to send them home to my neighbor. But they still know me every time I visit they come right up to me. I did spoil them rotten. So just be prepared, you have been forewarned! Lol. But I've heard the ones that are hand raised are much easier to care for as adults. They'll stay close to home, let you administer medication, ect. Keep me posted when you decide to try them.

I actually did full eggtopsies on my last hatch (I usually don't anymore) just to get some good pics. I had a couple like this. One even had a fully absorbed yolk sac and looked perfect. Sometimes there's just no visable signs of why they quit. Maybe something internal or neurological.
So Im feeling like a smarty pants this morning. All along one of the eggs has had a giant air sac while the other two have been normal. I told my husband I bet that one wouldnt be able to turn property since it has so little space in there. Do you think your temps may have been a bit low to cause the delay? As long as the malpositioned pipper can breathe then give it sometime. They take longer because the external pip is actually the internal pip also. Good job on the other ones!!
