Hands on hatching and help

If it's truely started zipping itself I would finish the zip and take the cap off and either put it back under momma like that or free it from the shell and stick the chick back under momma. (Providing all the veining is retracted and tolk absorbed of course.)
The one egg has the shell completely zipped, but its been like that all day (about 12 hours now). If I'm understanding you correctly, I should remove the shell completely from the top portion of the zip. What about the membrane underneath? What about the other egg that has just had a pip for over 15 hours now? Should I leave that one alone or should I help with the unzipping? Sorry to ask so many questions, this is my first hatch and I'd hate to have chicks die in their eggs when they are still alive.

The one that has zipped, take off the top of the shell. If it is zipped the membrane should be zipped around it as well. I wouldn't be surprised it it was dried and stuck if it has zipped for that long and not pushed out. Myself, I would get the chick out and put under momma hen if it is alright.

The one that has only pipped I would put back under momma if she will stay sitting on it.

Unfortunetly we can't save them all and occasionally we will loose one. It's hard, but as a hatcher you come to exect it. However, your zipper just sounds like it needs help and the pipper sounds like it needs more time as long as the membrane looks good and it's still lively.

Thank you! Wish me luck! I'm going out to check on the little guys again. Maybe i'll get lucky and it's hatched on its own. Its nearly midnight here, but I'm determined to save that chick. I'll post back and let you know how they both do. I'm taking your advice and leaving just the pipped one under mama if she's still sitting on it.

Just Candled ;-) & more drawback from the more pokey egg.
Think I saw her starting to work on the internal pip.

I'm feeling a little better they are getting there. :fl

:fl as the membrane continues to draw down you will see it start to form around the chick. Underneath, where it is the highest (if you know what I mean) you will be able to see the outline of the chick. And you will see the chick moving and pushing on the membrane. Then they will internally pip. Just hang in there!! :fl

So after 4+ days of one of my babies trying to hatch, I finally had to get in there and help him out! I made sure the humidity was super high all morning and wrapped a wet paper towel around the egg. It worked great! A few hours later I was able to get the shell off successfully without harming the duckling. Poor little guy was so weak though :( much much much weaker than my the ones that hatched in good time. He has a very crooked neck, can't walk well, and seems to have a nonfunctional wing. But boy does he make up for all that in character!! We have named him Trooper because he's been such a trooper! Any suggestions on anything I might do to help him? I have heard of adding Brewers yeast to their food

Good job helping him!! I love the ones that keeping fighting no matter what! He deserves that name!

I have a chick!!! Saw it hatch!!
Now it's over trying to help her friend!! It was literally pecking it's friends egg!! Is this common?

Congrats!! It's telling it's brother or sister to get a move on it!!

I have 10 eggs under a broody hen.  As of this afternoon, 8 are hatched and doing well.  Other 2 eggs were still under hen. Checked on her tonight and she's off the 2 eggs.  One has been pipped and no further progress since this morning.  Chick is ALIVE and i can hear cheeping and feel movement.  Other egg is nearly zipped and I can see feathers of chick, but has been zipped like this since this morning.  I put eggs back under hen.  This is my first hatch.  Do I help, do I not?  I don't want to help too early, but I don't want to wait too long either.  Any thought on what I should do?  Strange to me that mama would get off of them when she was a committed sitter.  This is her first brood.  She's being a good mama showing other chicks where water is and food. Just concerned that she was sitting on other side of nest with all her hatched chicks, and the eggs were just left.  Eggs were due to start hatching today, but we had our first arrival yesterday morning and was completely fluffy and dry at 10 am.   We live in Florida and it's hot and humid here, so I wonder if that's why they started early?

I saw your other quotes and agree with what everyone said. If that chick did start zipping then it's ready probably just stuck. Pull the white outter membrane off or out of the way a little and see what's going on. It probably just needs a little help. You can use q-tips with warm water to help if the inner membrane is dried out or stick to the chick. But it needs to come out!! :)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, if you have any questions or get nervous post a pic if you can. That's always really helpful when giving advice for assists.

I have a forced air Janoel incubator and the weather has been good this last week, pretty consistent. My temperature was around 38 degrees (I know it's a little high but the thermometer is right under the fan). Humidity was around 45%~55% for the first two weeks and I kept it at around 55-68 (mainly on the high side) for lockdown. They were shipped eggs, so I'm guessing that was my main problem.

What breed are you trying to hatch? Shipped eggs are notorious for dying in lockdown. My last batch of shipped call eggs ALL died day before hatch day. Are you going to try shipped again? Did you turn them right away? Were they laying flat or upright in cartons? How were the air cells when they arrived?

How about those ocellated turkeys???? Boy, I wouldn't mind something that pretty.....

Nice subject change... I just ignore now... ;)

Oh my G!!! I just snorted Dr Pepper everywhere. .

You know I got my :fl for you!!!

Exactly! I can totally understand now from my experience why you love them so much!

And trust me, my neighbor about 4 houses down has a bunch of calls and when they get going at night I can hear them loud and clear from by backdoor.

Looks like the girls have good taste with where they pick to lay!!

They're impossible not to love, aren't they? Especially a loner... :D

They dug into the damp mulch to lay those, so please excuse the slightly darkened shell... they're clean of poo, and I brushed them off, just some healthy growing base, lol...

Good news is got two locks the third is on the way soon. Bad news is my son got sick again and it through everything into a panic. The rabbits got out the hen got out. And he accidentally put tricky in the wrong cage. Needless to say I have another hen in sick bay. I can't win. I need to get the duck eggs out of the coop so I can put my drake back with the girls. So I can move my middle ducks . To the pen where eithen is. So I can move the baby ducks where middle ducks our. So my baby's coming Monday have the baby coop. It's not working.

Ive had 2 chicks hatch last night.. 1 starting slowly to zip finally.. I think. One other pip.
When should I move the first 2 chicks into brooder under heat lamp? The first hatched around 10pm last night and the 2nd was between 1-3am.
I know it's a personal choice and everyone does it different but this is my first time hatching chicks and I just want to try and do the best thing for them lol!
Thanks!

As long as they're **mostly** dry and getting good on their feet is when I move.. I say mostly by a lot of time humidity in the hatcher prevents a good complete dry.
But I also like staring at a bunch of new fluffies checking out their new brood home..lol

How'd everything turn out.. usually once a chick is zipped, their veins are completely absorbed and it's safe to come out.. sometimes they just wear themselves out zipping and just a little piece of membrane is too much for them to over power so tired a d they need a boost ♡
But, yes, the lil with the pip, give it time under mama.. IF she is truly do e, and leaves the nest with the chicks and leaves that egg, you can always stick it down in you bra for the day ;)
