Hands on hatching and help

Hey all, I haven't been on here in forever. Took a hatching break over the winter. I know this is the hatching site but can't find help anywhere else. I have a sick hen. After research I've decided to try tylan 50 injectible. My poor silkie is so thin she has no breast muscle to inject. I read some people use the back of the neck. Will this still be effective? Also I have to use a diabetic needle. How do I figure out dosage in units? If anyone knows it would be much appreciated. This is our last ditch effort to save her.. Tried everything else..

I give it orally---probably a little less than 1ml dosage for a silkie. I has some silkies that got soooo thin as you described and they were eat up with worms----I used fenbendazole before they got at Death and saved them. Might not be your problem, but it was for me.

Whatever they dose amount, or how it's given, it's supposed to be given no less than twice a day.

I rarely have one to die, so no I see no need to send one out of a hundred or two to have a necropsy. Even some people on here have more to die(higher %) than that and they remove them the time they hatch basically. My System/set-up works great for me. I use to take them out soon after they dried-----most regulars on here know my results from that.

I do not mind your opinions, we all got opinions. My main purpose for leaving all them in till day 22 is for having a higher, trouble free hatch %. Just for info there was 221 eggs in this hatch---220 hatched---the one that did not hatch I seen and thought it was a early death when I put them into lock down----but I wanted to give it a chance.  

I would not try anymore to tell anyone that their way is wrong----Do your hatch just the way you want---open all you want and remove all the hatched chicks you want---take tweezers all you want and help some hatch.  I just do my hatches my way and would not change because I have right at 100% hatch every hatch and I like to try and help by sharing my results on what I feel does or does not hurt for my hatches. I just want everyone to have good hatches and as trouble free as possible. Good Luck

I think the thread you are looking for to post on then is the He Said She Said thread. That's the thread where everyone discusses their hatching methods and no one argues who's right or wrong.

I don't mean this offensively and please don't take this the wrong way, you are definitely welcome here, but I'm not sure why you're subbed to this thread. You don't seem to be a hands on hatcher. Why some of your posts here have been met with negatively is because this is our thread for that so it's frustrating to some to have someone posting advice against our methods, which you have accidentally done a couple times.

I think you would be happier on the other thread, which was created by the same OP and a lot of the same people follow. You're more likely to enjoy the other thread as people are more apt to be looking for the kind of of advice you have and want to take it. Here, not so much It's just that you're not a Hands On hatcher, which is not a bad thing, but we all are, and we all come to this specific thread for advice about that particular topic. So the other thread is much more up your alley.

Some people give it orally, so you could try that. Send a PM to Eggcessive for dosing info because I think she's used it before. Tylan only treats a few types of bacterial, but you might get lucky. Has she been dewormed?

I have the correct dosing. Just having trouble figuring out my paticular syringe. I've wormed with ivermectin. I don't see any tapeworm in her poo. Should I try a different kind?

Does that great different worms then ivermectin? I may give it a try. I don't feel comfortable giving the meds orally. I know that's strange but I'm terrified of me accidentally choking her. I am diabetic and give myself shots so I feel more comfortable with that.

The dose chart I found is per pound which is good cause she is so small. It said 0.3cc for her size.

This chart you found is wrong if it says to give Tylan only once a day. All veterinary literature says to give it no less than twice a day, but do what you're comfortable doing. Both Eggcessive and Mimihorse can give you proper dosing instructions.

No the dose I believe is for twice a day. Another person told me once a day but wasn't sure about that. My girl is about a pound right now. The chart I found sais 0.3cc for 1lb bantam. I'm using my diabetic needles. I think I have a pic.

That's one thing I've never had a problem with. After hatch mortality. In 2/12 going on 3 years of hatching, I've lost 3. One literally busted out the top of the shell like 3 hours after pip. Still had a fully functioning egg to chick vascular system and ruptured yolk. I don't know if it ruptured the yolk in it's attempts to break out, or if it ruptured the yolk in the egg and that prompted it to hatch before it was ready, but I'll probably never understand what caused it to hatch so quick after pipping when it wasn't ready. A second was a nn. He was an assist. Looked perfectly healthy at hatch, was as active as normal, but within a day or two, started having very runny, the equivalent to diarrhea, I was constantly washing it's butt, it was sore and red. He never gained weight and I was never able to find anything that treated the digestive issues. At 8 days he took a turn for the worse and died day 9. The other one was a healthy big white chick. Somewhere between week 1 and 2 I went to feed and change water and it was flattened. I can only assume that for some reason, maybe when I was vacuuming, or something spooked them they all rushed to the other end and took him down.

I've been very lucky with my birds, even into adulthood. I've had one prolapse vent, and have had to treat for mites/lice. A couple small incidents of frostbite on overly large combs. I've never lost a bird to cold winter either. Did loose my favorite silkie to that nasty momma hen that attacked her and pecked her head open. Only chicken I've ever cried over.

The syringe you pictured is 0.5 ml or 1/2 ml (ml = cc). If you want to give 0.3 ml, just fill to the 30 mark on your syringe. 30 on all three of these syringes = 0.3 ml, or 3/10 ml.
