Hands on hatching and help

I change my answer on the Day ??? egg to day 20 or 21 because I just checked the incubators and it had pipped. So off to the hatcher it went.

Ha! I found it...had to go way back! This was my egg that almost blew almost 3 years ago. I went to check on my eggs and noticed something amiss. The pic of it in the turner is exactly how I found it and it was stuck. I thought for sure it was going to pop trying to get it out but it didn't. And it didn't stink until I cracked it open.

UGH! I just went through this. I bought bantam cochin frizzle eggs. They were shipped less than 200 miles. I candled them and put them in the incubator after sitting for 30 hours. On Day 2, 1 started oozing so I removed it. It was stinky. Day 3 there were 2 oozing eggs removed those stinky eggs too. Day 4 the top of an egg completely exploded. Black gook and stench was awful! I removed it and cleaned everything up and candled the eggs. There were 2 clears so I removed them, but didn't crack them open. Other eggs seemed to have development so I left them in. Day 5 no problems. Day 6 another egg exploded. I'm really ticked now. I clean it up and removed all the others and cracked them open. They were all full of black stinky gook! Seller doesn't want to refund for her bad eggs, but wants me to pay shipping to send me new bad eggs. No thank you! I had 22 silkie eggs in the same bator set at the same time. 9 were clear. I removed those and cracked them open. They looked like a normal egg.

Let's see, I'm on:

Day 22 for two goose eggs
Day 19 for another goose egg
Day ??? for a single AC egg (forgot to mark the day I set but it's due sometime soon)
Day 14 for other AC eggs
Day 11 for an EE egg
Day 7 for another AC egg
Day 2 for some d'uccles, ACs, and an OE and a random egg that might be a guinea egg, I set it to find out

I think that's all of them.
My Sebastapol goose egg made it to Day 23 or 24 and quit.

Is the lower fertility normal for them?  I got 22 in the incubator and 9 were clear.

Well, cold weather can drop fertility and we're just starting to get spring up here, more or less, and fluffy silkies can have a problem because of all the fluff back there. Sometimes trimming around the vents can help with fertility.

Smudge is peeing in his path of progress around here. The little booger nailed me - again! This time he broke the skin and left a big bruise on my calf. Yes, I've done the walking through him treatment. I've done the carrying him around treatment (as it turns out that's why Ken ends up picking him up and carrying him sometimes, he just didn't say anything doggone it!), and I even nailed him with the water hose when he came at me. I've heard that if a Silkie roo decides to be nasty, it can be really hard to rehabilitate them. So, knowing what you all know about my family - Katie's autism and her constant presence in the chicken area, and Kendra in her wheelchair and walker - do I risk it?

I won't keep a people aggressive roo. My silkie roo drew blood on me this morning. First time he's ever done that. I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt that it was because he and Blooie were having a moment (more like he was being a brat to Blooie) and I stepped in and scolded him and when I turned to walk away he temporarily lost his little buggin mind. But if it starts becoming a thing, his little black fuzzy butt will be shipping off.

I had two Polish roosters like that. One I did the carrying around and treats. Lots of affection etc.. And it worked. To this day he is the sweetest little roo. The second one, his brother also did well with our rehab. Unfortunately I couldnt break him of chasing my 4 year old. To me thats a deal breaker. He now lives on a 40 acre farm. He doesn't have it as good as he did here but he is lucky he didn't become someone's dinner with his nasty attitude lol. I personally wouldn't keep him if you have tried rehabilitation and its not been successful.

Thanks guys. I think the biggest stumbling block is me......I worked so hard and fretted so much to get a good hatch (with a lot of help!!) and planned on keeping Smudge and King Tut for their whole little chicken lives. And of course, there's Katie to think about. Think I'll talk to her tomorrow and see how she feels about trying to re-home him. She's usually pretty down-to-earth about stuff like that. Doggone it!! King Tut is just fine - he's pretty laid back. But Smudge is feeling his oats!!
