Hands on hatching and help

I had the same problem. I read about it and asked around. It just depends on what you read and who you ask. so here is what I did. I put the unhatched eggs, the hen and the chicks she had already hatched in a crate that was small to discourage her from abandoning the other eggs, yet she could stay with the chicks. I was told moving them was risky she may completely stop brooding altogether. IMade a nest in the crate first, and did the switch all at once very close to her original nesting box. I did NOT go back and forth making trips, as I was afraid she would get really confused then. I moved the live chicks into the crate first, then the eggs then the mama hen. It worked great!!! Good luck you just don't know what to do in a case like that.

thanks for the advice! that made me a little more calmer, Ever since the two chicks hatch she hasent budged, so im praying that all will go well and she'll hatch the other eggs

I have 2 chicks under a broody so far, 1 didn't need my help, but 1 did.
I just helped one hatch. It had a small hole around the pip zone, but couldn't move anymore. So I helped a little, pulled she'll off, waited 15 minutes, went back outside, started pulling membrane, no blood, so I kept going, Chick had already absorbed Everything, the veins, the yolk. It was just too big to turn around in the shell.

That is exactly what happened to mine. It had curled toes on the left foot. 30 hours with some tape on toes to keep them straight. I'm going to peel it off in the morning and check it. Good luck with your others. The one I was waiting on got contaminated and died in the shell.

Hello, I need some advice just to ease my worrying. I have a broody have that has two chick that just hatched today which we weren't expecting. all the other eggs arent suppose to hatch for another week, shes in a small brooder box but i fear that shes going to want to give up on her other eggs and take care of just the two chicks. Will she stay on the eggs or will she continue to lay on them until they hatch? heres a pic of the brooder box i made for her Do you think since its kinda small she'll just lay on her eggs and the chicks?

Chances are within a couple days she will leave the eggs to care for the chicks. If you have an incubator, I would get it ready.

Need advise on this baby....is everything looking ok? It piped at 6pm sat...it is rocking it egg and I can see it breathing by the pip. It has cracked a little more of the shell ...but looks like its going to the top of the egg rather than around?

AND.....

duckling number 1 is out

One of my chicks is really quiet! Does nothing but sleep and if I put my hand in all the others run around in a frenzy but this one just stands there even if I go to pick it up. Is it ok? It doesn't try to wriggle free when I pick it up either I'm a little bit worried

Congrats on the hatcher!! Adorable!! Ducklings like to punch around for a while before they start to actually zip. Some will smack the shell several times before they really get serious. Unless its actually continuing to progress in the wrong direction, I wouldn't worry just yet. :fl
