Hands on hatching and help

Oh I lobe runners! They are adorable when they walk lol.

It's really strange they stand just like humans they can already see over the brooder side think I'm going to have to increase the size

I think I caught the Polish with Wry Neck real early. I saw it twist its neck around and walk backwards twice. I have it in a rubber tote now and I haven't seen it do it at all. I'm giving it Poly Vi Sol, Vitamin E and scrambled eggs. I don't know that it is better, but certainly not worse.

It will be a busy week on the little homestead. I've got 153 quail eggs due to hatch on the 11th and 9 turkey eggs due on the 12th and I will be making a run up to the Oklahoma City area sometime this week to purchase and transport home a flock of Lavender Cuckoo Orpingtons. I've got hubby and son building a brooder for the quail and setting up a coop and pen for the Orpingtons!

I'm new to chickens completely and like a nut job I decided to hatch chicks. Turns out I picked black copper marans which apparently are one of the hardest. Oops. On my other post I was referred to here for help. I need help.

Ok, I assisted my chickies. Two are fine. Three I stopped when the membranes had red stain on them. I stopped pulling the membrane off. And these two are bleeding. The membranes were sooo dried out. I hope I haven't killed them! So, I'm terrified. Any recommendations? I'm not sure what to do next and how far to intervene?

Maybe Amy or some of the good hands on hatchers can help you. Where did you get the info that BCM was one of the hardest?? I have hatched 100's of them and they hatch as good as any of the others---never been a problem. Sure candling them is not as easy if you are one that likes to see the embryo moving. Good Luck!

Those membranes are not dried out. They are perfect. You want to see that outer membrane nice papery white and the inner membrane clear. You can put some cornstartch on the bleeding to staunch it. Now that you have that much membrane exposed prematurely, you need to put some Vaseline, neosporin without pain relief or coconut oil on the membrane to keep it from drying out. You never want to put more than a safety hole, a tiny pin/nail size hole in the air cell before they pip their self.

Me. Actually I said that people often have a harder time hatching the BCMs before they figure out the humidity. I've seen lots of people struggle with BCMs because generally they loose moisture slower because of the pigmentation making the shells thicker. You already use a lower humidity, many people do not.

I've always had great luck with the bcm. My issue was not being able to candle properly. Mine always hatched well though. For some reason I struggled with ameracaunas...

This hatch is looking good. Mid day 19. All but 5 are internally pipped or externally pipped. (5 externally.) The other 5 are still moving. 4 were pushing up into the air cell, just not broke through from what I could tell. It would be great to have another 100% hatch! Come on babies!!

I need to clean the brooder though and put the screen back up to keep the older ones separated. Can't wait to see what hatches!

First one hatched over an hour ago. It's a dark one. Drying blue/silver.

I just finished up a hatch of porcelain d'uccles that went really well. I hatched 10 out of 12 eggs, so an 83% hatch rate. Not bad at all for shipped eggs from California! I didn't have to do any assisting either, it was a nice easy hatch.
