Hands on hatching and help

I'm pretty sure one spraddled leg. Just one of his legs slips straight out to the side if he tries to stand up. With the little device on he can stand more normally. Without it he can only hobble on his legs not his feet of that makes sense. Otherwise whoop there goes one leg. He wasn't on a slippery surface of anything just he was early i'm pretty sure from severe saddled air cells they ran out of room too fast.

I will read the link now for more clarification thankyou :)

Also I am giving game bird starter crumbles which they seem to like. The guy at the feed store said I don't need more niacin but I'm guessing he's wrong? I cannot find the nutritional breakdown anywhere not even online! Should I get brewers yeast anyway today especially in light of the leg issues? Or is there a risk of too much niacin?

It does cover spraddle leg quite thoroughly. You can correct that if you start now. :D

He's adorable!! :love
Spraddle leg is one of the easier fixes. Looks like you did a fine job! What you used is fine if he gets along well with it. I've also used band-aids, cut in half, and vet wrap. I have lots of feather legged babies. So sometimes it just takes a little trial and error to see what works best for the baby.

I believe the gamebird feed should be enough. I use flock raiser and never supplement more niacin, and haven't had a problem with ducklings, but everyone has their own preference.

Thank you yes he is so cute. Soo tiny. I never name any of my fowl but man after assisting this guy and thinking he was a gonner for sure I am pretty fond of "Crumbles" lol

I just added a little bird vitamin to their water which has vit D,E,A,K niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, iodine folic acid and a couple others. Do you think that's OK?

Crumbles is a really cute name!

Maybe Ron can comment on the extra vitamins? I don't think they will hurt early on, not sure how long that would be advised though.

The sooner you get the band on to fix the leg the better it will work. You have a fairly shot window before the ligaments are too tough to re set

The vitamin sounds good! Do not give it to them for more that two days though. Their kidneys are fragile. After the vitamins, good high protein starter is best

Hey, so the time has come! I have 10 pips and two hatched already, but there's one I'm a bit concerned about. He was one of the first to pip, close to 24 hours ago now. This morning, about 9 hours ago, he had made the pip hole quite a bit bigger and I could see his beak, but no more progress after that. About 3 hours ago I saw the edges of the hole we're starting to go yellow so I put a tiny bit of coconut oil on it. I chipped away a little bit more shell at the air cell to see what was going on, and there were some fine veins in the membrane, so I put him back and left him alone. Is it safe to leave him for a while yet, or should I be worried? His beak is clear so he can breathe ok.

Thanks for any support, this is nerve-racking!

If you can see veins, just keep the chick moisturized and wait. It is fine to wait. It will actually hurt the chick more if you don't wait.

At this point is sounds like he may be a lazy hatcher. Wait until the others are out--The ones that hatch often encourage the lazy ones to get going.
