Happy Chickens

I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, probably not, but the one with the smallest comb and wattles, almost looks like she has none is Penny. The darker one with the floppy comb is Amber and the other one is, of course, Angel. She has a little bigger comb, kind of raised up in the back, and bigger wattles.

You can kind of see it here

Left to right Penny, Bunny, Amber, Angel.

And of course May, Diva, and one of the Australorps in the background

Thank you for the picture overload! I love chicken pics, especially happy chickens. In the evenings, after dinner the whole 5 of us sit out back on our lounge chairs and watch the chickens free range. The kiddos, (5, 3 and 1) don't sit for long and run and play around the yard. Happy chickes and happy kiddos! My favorite 2 things about letting them free range are watching them dust bathe and seeing them run around like crazy when they pick up a bug. :wee:love

Glad to hear that your hens (and you) are happy now that they are consistent free rangers!
I live in a residential area/suburbia, but we recently got it passed in our city to allow chickens. Our hens (and my darling rude Rooster, Rupert) explore the backyard all day long. Margot (Australorp) and Sneeze (Ameracauna) are quite chatty, but Maggie (Ameracauna), Agnes (SLW) and Prudence (Ameracauna) are relatively quiet. And the eggs are delicious! The best bit is going outside and having a "chat" with the girls on my lap; they're hilarious, though, when they are pecking through the grass and eating bugs. I couldn't stand to keep them in a run unless it's a rainy day, they tend not to have the common sense to get under cover---it's a desert in there, too.

And those are my two favorite things too. That and watching them fly across the yard lol their friend takes off and then they all take off running/flying and squawking. :lau

And thank you

Thanks! Mine don't really sit in my lap but I love talking to them too. I also don't spend that much time with mine though anymore but now I am starting to spend more time with them :)

Your birds are beautiful!!

And also the girls have been SO LOUD today, for like hours. Off and on but still. I think I have one or two culprits LOL but anyway, I think it's just the egg song but they were sooo obnoxious. So I let them outside finally just a few minutes ago and theu instantly shut up!! Amazing!

Well, actually, Bunny is still carrying on in the run. She is the culprit I think who then gets the Australorps going. She won't shut up!!

I am hoping she comes out of the run soon and shuts up like the other girls LOL

Oh good, she finally came out of the run. Hallelujah LOL

But anyway, point being, it is amazing how they INSTANTLY shut up when they get outside

Even Bunny

Here are my brown leghorn pullets and their bantam sisters, all are now 7 weeks, still confined. The plan all along has been to free range the leghorns after they are grown. As I already mentioned, they supposedly excellent at evading predators. My husband says how can you keep the bantams confined, they are all good friends and very attached to each other, as you see in the pic. The bantams are very good at flying and are quick, but the Sebright's silver color really stands out. And the D'uccles beard when it grows in, may impair vision? These features might make them easy targets. I have a couple more months to decide. If any readers have experience with banties and free ranging, I'd like to hear.
