Thinking back to your neighbor who owned them... that's probably why he kept them caged to prevent them fighting. Just thinking...you may need to bite the bullet & have a separate enclosure/run for the aggressive breed/birds to save your gentler birds from grief. That will enable you to gather fertile game bird eggs too before they hatch ☹️
The ones he kept caged, were Pullets: queso, jalapeno and Frejole. I raised them- he took them 😡

Hey guys, sorry I’ve not been on here… I’ve been focusing on my schoolwork and I decided to put my phone down so that I could knock a bunch of work out.
And I still have more work…
I’ve decided I'm not going to be on here that often, just every once in a while, so that I can check in on y’all and update you guys on my chooks.

Pretty roo ❣️ I like your deer fence & posts too. It's what we used to separate our yard & it's standing up still after 6 yrs. Some bows & dents but still sturdy. We have paver steps on most of the fence line so maybe that helps keep our fence ground posts secure? All I know is it's been good for us ~ when we spend $$$ we want to know it will give decent servicability.

Dakota has returned. Now I’m missing nobody, but hiding places are very well placed.
Blue was gone last night, Dakota was missing for two days. I guess I better have a separate enclosure built for the rooster population. I won’t rehome any game roosters in this area, due to illegal cock fighting. I despise anyone who would exploit a poor rooster to fighting to the death just for money, or entertainment 😡:rant

Yesterday I was so bummed about our friend's passing I totally forgot it was my birthday! But sweet DH didn't forget & got me surprise ~ soft Chinese food & Chinese sweet desert (my dental surgery work last Monday).

Again... my last birthday party I was 21... so that makes me 22 for this year too?

Time to Meet the Rest of the Girls

The initial release was a complete disaster. Aster, Lady Featherington, and Sydney invaded and assaulted. At one point Lady Featherington was trying to ride little Joy.

I was forced to physically remove the 3 of them.

Only Aster came back. After several discussions Aster understood my position and has not been chasing them. She will get a peck on if they get too close but it's not malicious like the other 2 were.

One great observation was that anytime Tilly or Joy squawked out. Niamh came running to see what was going on. I love that.

Perhaps their terror at the Bigs will bring them closer together.

The first chance Niamh has to go into the house she took and left her new friends far behind.

After the initial attack and separation, the Phyllistines did enjoy some time by the garden together.

Once the big girls settled into a cracked corn induce torpor, the Phyllistines went under the magnolia tree. I was eventually able to get a photo of all 8 for the first time. Can you find them all?

Sweet babies❣️Polish & Silkies are much gentler breeds than layers/standard bigger breeds. Even w/our gentle mid-size Dominique (who's aging) around our 5 Silkies she can get snippy/annoyed if they get around her treats but not injurious. But generally she leaves them alone.

We've had standard layers in the past & found them generally way too bullying to keep around gentle Silkies. Silkies like Polish are great without the excessive b*tchy moods of layer breeds. I only found the White Leghorn layer sweet around Silkies ~ the Buff Leghorn (had BO cross) was aggressive & it started to disrupt the peaceful flock to the point that we rehomed the bigger layer breeds to our neighbor's flock who was more than delighted for the eggs.

DH says our egg skelter is filled w/ Silkie eggs again & he needs to make another quiche! & we only have 4 out of 5 Silkies laying right now! These girls lay thruout the 4-season year & have the biggest bantam egg size that's the same size as our mid-size standard Dominique eggs!

Under the Deck

If you remember, Nimue loved it under the deck. So I finally closed it off from chicken access as I did not want a nest of eggs under there.

Well little Joy found a way in. I had to disassemble portions of the deck to get her back out. That was work I had not planned on today.

Little troublemaker.

Bath Time

There was a very nice moment where Niamh and Joy enjoyed a bath together.

That is so incredibly sweet❣️ I always thought about adding gentle Polish & Bantam Cochins to our Silkies but the timing was never right to do so & now what we have will be our last birds due to our own advancing age & poor health. We are enjoying this last peaceful flock.
