I thought I would post an update for this weekend. The roof is built to slide off and on for cleaning or dumping compost.

I'm getting close to getting the coop all finished up. I have all the hardware cloth installed. I covered the windows with hardware cloth and I put in lots of leaves from the forest floor.

Thank you very much. I am getting ready to take delivery on chicks so I spent the day working on a brooder. I started by building an inverted heated box but it took up too much space in the brooder so I am back to the heat lamp method. It's getting cold here and will be down in the twenties at night. I would prefer to start them in the coop rather than the pole building??. Here is the brooder. I work at a furniture factory so I was able to get a laminate cabinet fo ten dollars. I cut holes in it and covered them with hardware cloth. It has a door on the top and front.

What's an 'inverted heated box'?

One thing you could do to save some space is use chick sized waterer and feeder.

How many chicks?

You might be able to start in coop, if you have a safe power source...tho heat lamps in a coop make me nervous.

Very true, my water and feeder is quite large.. There will be 14 chicks. The broader is 15" high, 42" wide and 30" front to back.

I built a five sided Box based on the old style brooders that had a box with lights inverted to allow the heat to build up and escape around the bottom. My box is about 18"x18" x 6" deep. I loosely attached ice melt tape to the inside of the roof of the box but I don't like how hot it gets. Almost too hot to the touch. I had 2" legs on one side and it was a nice 85 degrees in there.

I am not too far from the house so I can run a heavy duty GFI protected cord out there.

The lamp is doing a good Job sitting on the brooder lid but I hear ya on the light. My thought though is that they will grow out of the brooder fairly quickly so it would be nice to let them explore in the coop when they are big enough.

I also like the heating pad method and that would be a lot safer than the ice melt tape.

IDK, Maybe I should just use the pole barn and then when they start feathering out I can treat them to trips to the coop on nice days.
