happy hens?

how do i know if my hens are happy?

As I watch my serama pullets in the morning from the patio I see them mock fighting, they are flitting from ground to perch to ground to perch, they're running and flapping their wings, they're sun bathing, dust bathing, preening their feathers, hopping to catch flies and other insects. digging holes in my lawn, squabbling over a worm one has found and another hen wants, the rooster is crowing and strutting his stuff for the girls to admire, eggs are finally appearing, one very young hen has gone broody and I can see her turning her eggs from the patio, all have sleek healthy bodies and perfect feathering, one little hen flies to my shoulder whenever she can, when I reach down and pick up the rooster his first action is to crow, eyes are bright, all are active, not a single sign of disease. Are they happy?

Yes. Happy in their own way. It's easy to see that they are enjoying being alive.

If your birds are well housed and well fed, chances are they are content. Are they of laying age? If so, production is a good way to guage a hen's overall well-being. Are you seeing any negative behaviors in your birds?

My hens are laying every 1 or 2nd. They seem very happy and good size and clean. However i went to the market and saw the chickens there. They seem stress and d
dirty and very thin in size.! Then when incame home i wondered about my ladies if their happy or need anything more. Yesterday for the 1st time they all laid an egg

Happy chickens are busy chickens, they scratch, they talk, they sun themselves, they roll in the dirt, they come running for food, happy chickens are allowed to do natural behavior, to decide for themselves where to go and what to do. That's my definition.
