Hope this is in the right section. If not please forgive.

Today was the first time I have hard boiled my fresh eggs, for pickled eggs. I could not peel the shell off without making gaping holes in the eggs some eggs were just yoke when I was finished. I did use 3 store bought eggs and they peeled like they normally should.
Does anybody know what is wrong with my eggs. I feed purina layying feed, oster shells and they get treats daily. My girls are Bantum, RIR and Easter Eggers. All of the eggs peeled the same way, except for the store bought.

Thank you so much for any reasons you may be able to give. Wendi

How fresh were the eggs? I think you need to let them sit in the fridge for a while before boiling them. I am told that fresh eggs are hard to peel. My hens have not started laying yet so hopefully someone has a better answer for you.

Nothing is wrong w/ yer eggs, no worries! They are fresh. Store bought, not so much.

Fresh eggs are harder to peel.

I let mine sit for a few weeks if I know I'm gonna make HBEs.

(You can try plunging them in iced water--not cold, iced--and cracking the shells, but it's not consistent.)

Thank you so much. Next time I do HBE I will prepare better and wait a couple weeks and try the ice water. Thank you so much again. Have a great day. Wendi

I agree with Devora, if you plunge then into ice water for about 5-10 mins you should have no problems peeling them. I did the same thing asking the same question! Trust me, the ice water works!
