Hi,

I have a blue Orpington that has a hard medium sized bump on her Wattle. She has been struggling to eat and therefore I was feeding her soft foods like soaked oats. She also smells very sour. I couple of months ago she had the sour smell and looked a bit off. So I had isolated her and just given water for about 24 hours then slowly started introducing food, but I think it has just gone down hill from there. She still walks and runs around with my other chickens, but often will be found standing with her head tucked. She is also very light, but still molting a little bit (new feathers starting to be introduced). She does want to eat because she comes up, but then she just stands still. I do live in New Zealand, but have a feeling that what she has could be a disease? All the other chickens are currently well and molting since it is middle of Autumn.

Any advice appreciated,
Thank you

Welcome To BYC!

Can you upload photos of your hen, her wattles/face and inside of her beak?
Thanks!

Smelling sour, check her crop to make sure its emptying overnight. Again, look inside the beak as well for any signs of canker or lesions.

If the crop is not emptying, follow the directions in the article below.

Thank you Wyorp Rock for your reply. I will reattempt to catch her when she goes up on the roost because she was not letting me catch her. Her crop is so small I can nearly not even feel it. She has not been wanting to eat just plain lukewarm soaked oats, but have seen her scurrying around for insects in the soil

Here are some links to photos (I can't attach the photos the other way sorry)
