Hard decision - cull Thor now or later? PICS added!

Of course. Here's a pic of Thor taken today - he'll be 3 years old on the 9th of this month:

And here is his son TJ (Thor, Jr.). He's 9 weeks old now. I had my doubts about his gender (denial?), but I noticed the tell-tale iridescent green tailfeathers just yesterday.

AznChick, thank you very much for the link. I'm willing to do just about anything to relieve his suffering.

Any chance Impy can fill in for the girls while you are on vacation?.... not sure you would enjoy your vacation knowing you have to come home and deal with putting him down.

Also, give thought not only to the pain Thor may be suffering.... but also, do you want to leave your stepdaughter to deal with it on her own if things take a turn for the worse while you are gone? Then your stepdaughter and the girls would be dealing with a totally diferent dynamic and if she isn't as chicken intuitive as yourself she may not know how to help the girls deal. If you did it now they have a while to get used to him being gone, you have a while to observe for any major problems before leaving and can have the peace of mind that they are working things out on their own while you are out of town, and then they have had some time to adjust to Thor's lack of presence before introducing his son to them. Too many changes at once may be more stressful on the flock than a few changes spread out over time. Good Luck!

Serious situation but that made me snicker! Yes we all know how well Impy has been helping Thor out. The week old "brahma" chicks in the coop are proof of that!

Gout is a treatable disease why put him down? go to a holistic store, herbal organic store and get him the supplements that will cure him he's so young to be gone so soon. I'd start him on ACV in his water right away, then add his supplements in a few days. Use Bragg organic cider with the mother it will clean his blood, If you have a hard time finding help pm and I'll put you in touch with my Herbalist. Kim

When I saw the title of the thread I was so hoping it was some other Thor not yours. I don't think he'll be out of your thoughts on vacation no matter what you choose. I know he will sound the alarm for his girls but, he isn't in shape to save himself.

My friend accidentally ran one of her hens over with the riding lawn mower. The hen lost her leg in the accident. She made a peg leg I believe that it was out of pop cycle sticks. Every day she changed the peg with gauze and surgical tape. Her hen adapted very well. It was touching to see her running around the yard with a peg leg. I am not sure if that helps you in any way. That would require some one skilled to perform an amputation. I hope that you can make a good decision for yourself and your family.
