Good morning-I could really use some advice. This morning I noticed my 1 1/2 yr old hen wouldn’t come out of the coop and was sitting in an odd way on the floor. I checked her over and found a hard knot in her crop. When I put her down she was wobbly to walk. I’m thinking it’s an impacted crop. I feel horrible for her. What’s the best treatment method?

Was this knot in the crop discovered before this hen had anything to eat? How large is the lump? Tennis ball? Golf ball? Walnut?

For impacted crop the treatment is one or two teaspoons of coconut oil given directly into the beak after chilling the oil slightly to make it solid and easy to handle.

Here is more info. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/
Yes, I found it before she had anything to eat. The link you attached was Extremely helpful! Thank you. I’ve got coconut oil chilling as I type and about to go give it a try. Saying a prayer!! Thanks again!

I tried the coconut oil and massage. The lump seems squishy compared to hard like I was originally thinking. So maybe this is a sour crop?? But I’m not noticing any foul smell. I’m even more concerned now because she is very lethargic and keeps dropping her wing and is very wobbly if/when she tries to walk. I was thinking about giving her an oral dose of Nutri-Drench to get some nutrients in her then go to the store and get supplies to treat her for a possible yeast infection. Thoughts/suggestions??

Before starting treatment for a crop issues, be sure you have a crop issue that needs treating. That can only be verified by checking the crop after resting all night. If the crop isn't empty in the morning before eating, then there's a crop issue.

There could be a more serious infection going on. That's why it's important to rule out crop issues. You might start tracking down an oral antibiotic since her symptoms point to that as a possibility.

That’s a great suggestion. Thank you. I’ll try that route.
