It's a terrible and really hard decision, one I've had to make twice this year. Talk about cry! It's awful to feel helpless. I'm sure all our thoughts will be with you tomorrow. You are doing what's best for him, even when it hurts.

It reminds me of another quote:

With great power comes great responsibility.

I chose to be responsible for these birds, to give them all the love in my heart, all the care in my power... but now I have to face "playing god", ie to end a life and THAT is what's hitting me hard in the chest. I think it would be easier to bear if my little Sunshine just fell asleep and never woke up... it would absolve me of the guilt that's eating me alive right now.

Lord, please give me the strength...

Yes that is sooo true about responsibility. I think when we take on pets (and our chickens are pets, for sure) we take on the responsibility for their lives. And part of that responsibility is figuring out when they are suffering, when their life has no good purpose or future, and putting an end to that suffering in a humane way. We have to do that for them....

Hi Technodoll, I completely understand your feelings about your little sick roo, poor guy. But he was loved and cared for, something not all animals get to experience. I don't think you need to harden up at all, too many hard people in this world already. You're a compassionate individual who feels bad for a life you couldn't save. I commend you for trying and wish you an easier mourning.

And you know what? Your sweet! And I thank you for being so.
