hardware cloth for flooring

I buy shavings from tsc for about 5 bucks a bag. I can cover the floor of my coop about 3" deep and it's a 6'x8' building. If you plan on changing it regularly you would only need about an inch or two. Hope this helps and welcome to BYC.

I have 6 RIR hens. I put a thin layer of clean bedding down at the end of summer, empty it and refill just as the bad weather starts to hit for winter, add to it and clean out under the roosts as needed during the winter, clean out totally again late March / early April...good until Fall again.

Hi Brandon,
welcome-byc.gif
from Hollywood, SC! Small state, so we aren't too far apart if you're coastal, too.

Wood shavings are the ideal bedding, but NOT cedar shavings. The bags of compressed shavings from TSC will actually fluff out to quite a bit. I use wheat straw in the outdoor coop a lot, but the shavings last longer.

There is a SC thread as well, go say hello!

Here's the SC thread:

There a few of us here!

Electronet (I highly recommend Premier for any electric fencing stuff, btw, most of my horse fence and my poultry net is from them, really IS high quality) is mainly for keeping fourlegged predators out. It will also keep unmotivated chickens in. Certainly most of them CAN fly out, but in many cases they just don't choose to. And of course people often use it for broilers which are not *going* to fly out. You have to understand its idiosyncrasies but it can certainly be useful in the right circumstances.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Thanks Much Pat! I wondered how that fence thing worked ... all over the area I see happy little hens INSIDE the fencing all of the time. I use Premier for shearing supplies for my alpacas.
