I would use the chain link over the hardware cloth, that way if the dogs do mess with it they will have a very hard time destroying your hardware cloth through the chain link. If that makes sense.

Dogs can usually be trained pretty easily to leave your animals alone. Your dogs may also protect the chickens from other animals that would venture into your property.
