The 1/2" hardware cloth we got from Home Depot last year was fine. It was nice and sturdy. Maybe they just got some bad wire in or changed suppliers. That sounds terrible!
1/4" hardware cloth is good for keeping out mice, but is made with too fine a gauge of wire for me. I do like something sturdier, for the predators we have around here.
