I use the 19 gauge, 1/2" by 1/2" inch wire spacing. I've also used 16 gauge, but that's a lot more expensive and very hard to cut.

I use the 1/2" square hardware cloth, galvanized.

Use the 1/2" unless you are specifically trying to keep out mice (which is nearly impossible btw

). It is stronger, also you can see through it better and it is more economical.
