I suggest that you get 1/2" hardware cloth. 1/2" refers to the size of the holes in the wire. If you get it in 2' wide rolls so you cando the bottom 2' of the run plus you want bury it in the ground like18" and attach to the bottom of run. You also want to cover vent openings and window openings from the inside.

Do you mean what gauge (thickness) of the wire?

I've used 16 and 19, both with 1/2" wire spacing. The 16 gauge is really hard to cut with wire cutters. The lower the gauge, the thicker the wire.
