Harness Trained

I printed out a picture of a hen on a harness earlier this year to show my DGD. We have a Pet Smart in our town now and I told her that we were going to take a chicken to Pet Smart on a leash!

She and I are hatching eggs this spring and she has already asked if she can pick one out for herself to train to walk on a leash. I have told her she could. But we have to figure out the diaper thing before we take it to town and into Pet Smart.....don't want to get the boot because of chicken poop!

However, I have this Barred Rock roo that has taken an intense dislike to me the last couple of months. I think a leash would do him some good!! Will be figuring out his size this week!

I use a small harness that would fit a med sized chihuahua. The leash I use is a slip leash (aka: Kennel Lead). It's light and he doesn't seem to mind it at all. Take a look at this website and you can see the type of lead I use.

Just slip the lead through the harness loop and you're set. All is lightweight and affordable. You can find both at your local pet store or buy online at www.petedge.com. They are 4' long and about 1/2" wide for a pack of 6.

I use a figure 8 harness for cats and a small cat or dog leash. He doesn't mind the harness, but it took a few minutes for him to get used to it. He does walk with me, but not the same way a dog would. I have trained several of my chickens and they seem to do fine once they get used to it. I mostly trained my tame chickens and ones I had handled fairly often.

My OEGB roo, Macho Man is harness trained as well. Two years ago I lead him through an obstacle course for the goats and sheep. We had to go over a hay bale, run through a maze of livestock pannels, run the length of the pen carrying a bucket of water, weave through three cones, and run over the hay bale again longways. He stayed with me they entire time and he seemed to enjoy it even.

LOL! My family is going to think that I have gone off of the deep end but I have to try this! I would think that it would work for keeping excess roos away from the ladies too!

I saw a video clip somewhere about a chicken harness,
they were at a pet supply store and bought a reptile harness.

Also, cat/kitten harnesses are usually made out of softer materials.

I suppose you'd want to be careful not to put pressure on the crop.

i try to put a parrot harness on my parrot, and he flips out he hates it, i might try it though on my little banty rooster

Great idea! Where did you get the harness from? Were thinking about putting a harness on our seramas as well.
